UCFSA – You did it again for the summer!

UCFSA – You did it again for the summer! thumbnail

The Annual Cultural Nite by the University of Calgary Filipino Students’ Association held on June 5th at the Martha Cohen Theatre was a tremendous success.  This year’s performance titled” Hoy! I Know What You Did Last Summer”, was another manifestation of how hardworking our Filipino-Canadian youth really are. The theatre was filled with family, friends, and supporters waiting to be entertained by the ambitious and exciting team of students from various walks of life. I felt the warmth ambience of love and affection as parents, aunts & uncles, brothers and sisters and friends everywhere cheered for the show to begin.

Roland Ferrer is this year’s President. He had done a pretty good job in extracting the talent in acting, dancing, and singing of his members and nailed another spectacular performance and culmination of talents.  The presentation of dances most especially is one that most of us here in Canada really miss. The colorful costumes, the strength of those bamboos, the flickers of those tea lights, and most of all the energy that comes out of the dancers, are truly something we all look forward to watch.

The theme revolved in a group of young campers who went for a camping trip and lost one of their friends. While searching for her, they found out they weren’t alone….and this is where the fun & excitement began as they discover social and cultural values via the presentations of dances and songs that should be kept within the hearts of our kababayans.

The entire program showcased our Heritage as Filipinos. Our dances of the past that is still well enjoyed by many of us, were presented with some touch of modern twists, beats, and tunes, keeping the original steps and moves of course. My personal favorite is the never-ending claps of two bamboo poles while the clappers try to maneuver everywhere the stage and their dancers follow trying not to get their feet caught by the closures. It was breathtaking and I always get teary-eyed right after a performance like that.

The show ended with the President saying his farewell and introducing the next President to man the group. The person who will lead them to the next Cultural Nite as the Cardinal number goes to XVIII – can’t  wait!!!!  Mabuhay kayo UCFSA..Mabuhay ang kabataang Pinoy!
