Then God spoke all these words…

by Pastor Nilo Briones

Hi, folks!  Starting this Fall, you’ll be reading a new series of articles that focuses on the Ten Commandments of God.  As we’re living in a world of lawlessness beyond measure, these laws are worth pondering in our hearts.  Although they are not to be taken as set of rules that, if followed, will guarantee anyone to enter heaven (since no one, apart from Jesus, ever perfectly followed them!), they are never-changing God’s standards of morality that are worth obeying.  What then is the purpose of God giving these commandments?  These laws demonstrate the truth and cause us to realize that we all have sinned (Romans 3:23) and are, therefore, in need of God’s mercy and grace, available only through “faith in Jesus Christ.”  Being sinners, we all need a Savior and our salvation for all eternity is through faith in Christ alone.  Once saved, and having the spirit of Christ in us, we can now obey these laws not to be saved but to testify to the world that Christ who is the fulfillment of the law is real within us.

The first four commandments deal with our relationship with God.  The last six commandments deal with our relationships with one another.  The Ten Commandments (that need to be memorized by heart) are recorded in the Bible in Exodus 20:1-17 and Deuteronomy 5:6-21 and are as follows:

1)  You shall have no other gods before Me.

2)  You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in

heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below

3)  You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the

LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.

4)  Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

5)  Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged

in the land which the LORD your God gives you.

6)  You shall not murder.

7)  You shall not commit adultery.

8)  You shall not steal.

9)  You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

10) You shall not covet.

As I read on an interview of Charlton Heston, the actor who has played the role of Moses in the motion picture entitled “The Ten Commandments,”  I was blessed with his answer to the question, “How did it feel to come down from Mount Sinai?  He replied, “Well, on coming down barefooted, I feel I’m never the same again!”  That’s it, when the LORD touches your life, you will never be the same again!  Take note of who has spoken these commandments as the chapter is started with the words…”Then God spoke all these words…” meaning all these commands are worth our attention and obedience.  (To be continued…) _______________________________________________________________________
