It was 22 years ago when I arrived in Canada and chose Calgary, Alberta to be my home.  Leaving my family and friends behind, it was a new adventure for me to be in a new country without knowing anyone.  That was the time I looked for a Filipino community paper and never found any, [...]

Heroes of the New Era

by Melvin Laureano on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 10:08pm

They came from a land scarce of milk and honey
In search for green pastures, they crossed even the widest sea
Left their hometown and their beloved family
In the pursuit of their ambitions and dreams so lofty.

The calloused palms of their creative hands
That keep on grasping in the foreign lands
Erected the skyscrapers in the middle of downtowns
And took care of the disabled septuagenarians.

Oftentimes their eyes are welled with tears
Homesickness strikes and difficult to ease
Sorrowfully missing their little angels
They can’t be together for a couple of years.

Caregivers are of great and noble responsibilities
Their patience and endurance are truly immense
Though sometimes laden with a tremendous sadness
They remain sturdy for their loved ones’ happiness.

Praise to those brave and diligent construction workers
For the precious fruits of their noteworthy labors
Rain or shine they build towering structures
Which gave this country such very good pictures.

Like ants and termites that work in a colony
Factory workers are of night and day duty
Deprived of sleep but strives constantly
Contributed much in the success of industry.

The sacrifices and hardships that they have encountered
Buckets of sweat and tears they incessantly suffered
Traded for a dollar they successfully gathered
Pride of their homeland, forever they will be remembered.

These people are sometimes considered as less fortunate
But to their impoverished nation they are remarkable and great
Their sacrifices and patriotism, actions so virtuous
They deserve to be regarded as the world’s new heroes.
