Calgary Voted a New Mayor and Councils

The political newcomer Naheed Nenshi won the election and became Calgary’s newest
mayor as of October 18th, 2010. Calgarians in all hues and colour packed the lobby of City Hall on Monday night at 7:00 pm to witness mayor-elect Nenshi being sworn-in as the city’s 36th mayor together with 14 Aldermen.

Mayor Nenshi made history, becoming the first Muslim to head a major Canadian city. The 38-
year-old business professor was considered a longshot — received 39 percent or 140,263 votes against his close rivals Ric McIver, 32 percent and anchorwoman Barb Higgins, 26 percent.

Mr. Nenshiʼs popularity and victory grew over a monthʼs campaign through the use of
internet and the popularity of the social network media which maybe the other
candidates did not seriously. During this time he became a serious threat to both McIver also known as “Mr No” and Higgins “The TV Woman”.

Most people believe that he appealed across the political spectrum and more people
who never voted for a long time got excited and caste their votes during this last election.

Mr. Nenshi also branded as the ” Purple Revolution” candidate hailed victorious,
because during his campaign period he was driven by a broad demographic support and a strong youth support.

During his speech after the oath, Mr. Nenshi gave the following very profound words to
his supporters “Today Calgary is a different place than yesterday. A better place.” He
also said that his win “means weʼve got a lot of work to do starting tomorrow(Tuesday).
He also mentioned that he made a promise to Calgarians, stating “today that
council will do our part, and I’ve asked Calgarians to do their part: to meet us, to
move forward, to make this a better city.”

Mayor Nenshi’s council consists of the following 14 alderman who he said he is
thrilled to work with:

Ward 1         Ward 2             Ward 3
Alderman Dale     Alderman Gord Lowe     Alderman Jim Stevenson
Hodges

Last parting positive note from Mayor Nenshi was “I know council and
administration are going to work hard to make sure (that) we don’t remove services Calgarians need, but we will also make sure that any tax increase
we see going forward is a reasonable one and one that makes sense for
the majority of Calgarians.”
