CHANGE STATUS; CHANGE ATTITUDE?!

By: Glynn Galla

Ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggaligan ay hindi makakarating sa paroroonan….

Sounds familiar?

It is one of the best Philippine quotes from our National Hero, Jose Rizal. The quote depicts how we act on certain situation like what we are having now as Filipino that works and lives in different country.

Many of us leave the Philippines for greener pasture, to help and sustain the needs of our family back home. Filipinos are family oriented in nature. And we can say that we are the race of congeniality, because of our unquestioned dedication to work, our values, our being cheerful in each way and the culture that embodies us; that make us outstand of who we are.

Grateful, that we have one of the best customs that we can share to the world, being courteous to elders, using respectful phrases like “PO” and “OPO” and always looking after each other.

But how long will these traits remain? Until they finally attain their permanent status?
Like some Filipinos are nice at first, seems everything is nothing wrong, and feels like they just want to help to Filipinos who are new here. It’s normal for us to show the “bayanihan” values, but along the way it gradually changed, maybe because they are tired of pretending like one? Or they just want to show their real persona?

Superficial, friends but not really friends, helping but not really helping, you thought they are very sincere but behind your back is the truth that you don’t want to hear. Too bad some Filipinos trust right away. You thought that since you are in the foreign land and seeing fellow Filipino help you out fast, in adjusting such environment. Unfortunately it’s not always the case.

All the goodness that they have is gone. Upon changing status, they change attitudes too, and you’re thinking that everything was true.

On the other side of the coin we salute those Filipinos that are still grounded; the virtue of humility is still with them. They remain unchanged; more so, gets even more close to those fellow kababayan who desperately needs help. They are willing to extend whatever helps that they can offer.  Changing status but not changing attitudes. The genuine of their intention to lift up their fellow Filipino instead of pulling down made them a living example of a true kababayan.

Like for instance, giving basic needs like clothing for new comers, giving some tips and guides on what are their rights as temporary workers and helping others to stand on their own. We admire such wonderful people; they serve as a model to all of us.

Being permanent, immigrant, or citizen here maybe, is not a measurement of your achievements life, but how many times you fall and rise again, of how you we’re you able to work in a foreign land while keeping your Filipino values radiate, that makes not just your family but your country to be proud of you.

For we know at those people that knows how to value where they came from, surely they will succeed in life.

You, will you turn around?
