You raise me up!
by Pastor Nilo Briones of Jesus Word of Life International Fellowship
Perhaps you have heard the contemporary, classical song, “You raise me up”, by the artist Josh Groban . I love this song as it reflects the blissful inclinations of a troubled soul when delivered by the Lord from burden. The first two stanzas are beautifully worded. It inspires us to know that our loving God raises us up when we are down and weary, when all things seems dark with hopelessness and desperation – such is the the faithfulness of the Lord to whoever has put his/her trust in Jesus. Almost everyone in the Christian circle can relate to this wonderful song of praise, as spelled out below:
“You Raise Me Up”
When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up… To more than I can be.
As the Bible psalmist says, “I shall remember the deeds of the Lord; Surely I will remember Your wonders of old. I will meditate on all Your work and muse on Your deeds.” (Psalm 77:11-12). So, whenever negative situations or problems arise that tend to rob us of strength and joy, let us be still and meditate on the goodness and mercy of God. Like a pilot that rises over an impending storm by plunging over the sky’s dark clouds, let us soar with wings like eagle and renew our strength with the blessed thought that the Lord will rise us up in His power. Sing and make music to the Lord whenever you’re downcasted. There is power in praise as it dispels evil and depressed thoughts.
Yes, indeed, whenever we’re weak, we are strong! – an awesome paradox that’s true and evident to all who commit everything to the Lord. He raises us up whenever we are down so we can stand on mountains or any insurmountable problems that we’re facing. He raises us up so we can walk and not faint nor drown in stormy seas of trials in life. That’s how great and glorious is our God whose outstretch arms are not too short to reach us in our life’s troubles.
