Travelaero Tips – FLYING WITH KIDS 101

Flying with kids is definitely a challenge. However, if you plan it ahead, any flight can be a breeze. Here are some tips to have a free-child temper explosions up in the air.

Have Proper Documents. If it’s only one parent that is accompanying the child(ren) out of the country, make sure that you have a signed and notarized letter from both parents stating that permission is given to the accompanying parent (or temporary guardian) to take the child out of the country and also the necessary medical release forms for said child(ren), especially when travelling to Mexico.

Prepare the children with the security clearance process. Discuss with your child(ren) in advance what to be expected such as their belongings are going to be put through the x-ray machine and they need to walk through the metal detector on their own, assure them that it’s okay and everybody have to go through it, so there’s no need to be scared.

Get the kids involved in planning your trip, show them maps, travel brochures on the places you will be visiting. They can also help you pack their favorite toys and books to pop in their own suitcase, just make sure that they don’t bring toys that would be mistaken for weapons.

Bring yummy snacks. Try to pack in zip-lock bags some finger foods like fruits, pretzels, cereals, crackers and drinks that don’t have sugar in them, otherwise your kid’s will get sugar rush and good luck with that. Make sure you pack some snacks for you too, such as granola bar. Be sure to pack an empty sippy cup or bottle in your bag and ask the flight attendant to fill it with milk or water once you get on board, so your child doesn’t get thirsty between services.

Pack some toys and books. Be sure to pack some toys to play with and story books to read while on the flight. Stickers, games, portable dvds, or laptop with  their favorite movies and music stored in it will make your kids happy and keep them busy.

Don’t forget to get toddler –sized earphones. Make sure the earphones are child-safe and comfortable to be used in watching in-flight movies.

Buy an expensive camera for children old enough to use it, they can take pictures from their own perspective that can create memories of their trip.

Bring sanitizers and moistened wipes that is perfect for cleaning sticky hands when you can’t find the washrooms.

Be sure to pack extra changes of clothes for yourself and more nappies than you think you’ll need. There will be times when children can spill drinks or puke on you, make sure also to bring airsickness bags as sometimes you can’t find one in the plane.

You can also bring medications just in case they got a headache, fever, stuffy nose or tummy ache as long as they don’t exceed 3.4 ounces (100ml) if you’ll put it in your hand carry.

Allow plenty of time to get to the airport and to check in – and you can often save time by checking in online before you leave home.

Switch your child’s routine to the new time as soon as you take off to minimize jetlag.

I hope these tips can help you prepare for your family trip with your kids.
