By:  Bro. Carlos “Bing” Gascon & Bro. Hardy del Castillo

The Friends of Fish Creek Provincial Park Society provides a number of programs that supplement the activities of the Park, preserve the history and ecology of this diverse ecosystem, and benefit the nearby communities.  The Friends’ programs are focused on environmental stewardship and education to ensure that Fish Creek Provincial Park continues to provide future generations with access to this natural oasis.

Every year the Knights of Columbus council 14746 San Lorenzo Ruiz of Calgary members together with 1200 volunteers providing approximately 15,000 hours of volunteer work make sure that this unique park, with its many species of birds and wildlife, its aquatic life, its abundance of native wildflowers and plants, and its diversity of habitat, continues to serve as a peaceful green retreat within the city of Calgary, particularly those communities near the Park. Friends programs are community-driven initiatives that educate and engage the public in the appreciation and responsible use of Fish Creek Provincial Park.

Saturday, October 8,2011 was a great day for volunteering in the outdoors for the all-Filipino Knights of Columbus council 14746 San Lorenzon Ruiz of Calgary. Upon the invitation of Friends of Fish Creek, the group worked together with the Calgary Mountain Bike Alliance, to work on a single track trail in Votier’s Flat in the southwest part of Fish Creek Park.

Led by Grand Knight Rodel Nagera Sr., the group of 9  was to work on a path that had damaged vegetation due to people leaving the designated pathways. The group dug the ground to loosen up, transplanted trees and put on a Trail Closed sign to discourage users from using it again.

For those who have not been to Fish Creek Park, come and see the fantastic views and enjoy the fresh air as you walk around the park.
