3. Mining companies complains critics, saying mining alleviates poverty

Gina Lopez of the Save Palawan Movement said big-scale miners were not
giving enough to uplift the lives of poor people in their areas of
operations and that mining firms have affected ecological and
environmental systems in those areas.

“In several years of our operation in Rio Tuba, Palawan, where our
mining company Nickel Asia is operating, we have spent as much as P60
million in the reforestation of logged-out and mined out areas,” he
said.

Brimo said the criticism was unfounded, as large-scale miners have
been cautiously conducting their operations in accordance with the
Mining Law. He said the critics failed to distinguish between
large-scale and small-scale mining operations.
