Seniors Are Our Future

By MP Devinder Shory

It is often said that children are our future, but we might look at it a different way. One in seven Canadians is now over the age of 65. In 25 years, nearly one in four Canadians will be a senior. This gives communities like Calgary Northeast a tremendous opportunity to benefit from a highly-skilled group of seniors who will be looking for new and meaningful ways to contribute to their communities by sharing their knowledge, skills and experiences.

This is why it gives me great pleasure to highlight our federal New Horizons for Seniors Program. Right now, and up to June 29, we are looking for community projects led or inspired by seniors who make a difference in the lives of others and in Calgary Northeast.

The New Horizons for Seniors Program supports the social participation and inclusion of seniors through five objectives: 1) promoting volunteerism among seniors and other generations; 2) engaging seniors in the community through the mentoring of others; 3) expanding awareness of elder abuse, including financial abuse; 4) supporting the social participation and inclusion of seniors; and 5) providing capital assistance for new and existing community projects and/or programs for seniors.

Community-based projects are eligible to receive up to $25,000 in grant funding per year, and I was very happy to make a recent announcement regarding this program at the INCA Senior Citizens Society. I hope to make many more of these happy announcements all across Calgary Northeast in the near future.

For more information about this Program and how to apply, please contact Kenton in my Calgary Northeast office at (403) 291-0018 or send an email to [email protected].

All the best,

Devinder Shory, MP

Calgary Northeast
