The other side

I am not sure what your schedule is like throughout the summer but ours continues to be jam packed with parties, concerts and festivals. To make it more exciting, we have visitors from across Canada and the USA and we welcome them to our beautiful city. I hope we can show them what makes our city and lives so much fun and they can experience what we see and do on a daily basis. We show them a mix of the “popular” events and activities such as the Calgary Stampede, but our lives are especially filled with making use of and enjoying the great outdoors. Clean, quiet and safe parks, lakes and rivers are hard to find in countries where the population is out of control and led by people and governments that have no interest in keeping these attractions in the condition that Mother Nature has given them to us.

One relatively new event in Calgary is GlobalFest, a fireworks competition at Elliston Park. It is extra fun having the Filipino team compete and show Calgary they can put on a fireworks display equal to any other country. However, the area I think the Philippines shines is the stage entertainment and the Philippine Pavilion as they are the most talented and hospitable people in the world. You don’t have to dwell on the fireworks part of the night, but instead get to the GlobalFest events a few hours early and get your money’s worth. Bring a little money to sample the fine cuisine offered by the Philippine vendors, always the most popular stop at GlobalFest. Collectively, GlobalFest is the biggest gathering of Filipinos of the year, so you will be sure to find many friends there! Don’t miss the huge group of performers the Philippine community is blessed with, led by the ever popular KASAYAHAN PERFORMING ARTS FOUNDATION team. Although KASAYAHAN 2012 was a blast, they put on other awesome shows year round all across Calgary!

Once the heat and noise of summer in the city dies down, we take the balance of our vacation time in September and October. This is a good time to travel to B.C., especially the Okanogan area. Fewer people are in that area in these months but the weather is still great and there is an abundance of fresh fruits and veggies. It is also considered the “low” season so our dollars go much further. Last year, what we saved on Hotel rooms (only $69/night) we used for both airplane and helicopter tours! If you have never experienced a helicopter tour, I strongly recommend it!

So here’s hoping you are making the most of your summer as well as enjoying those things which appeal to you. Life is a waste and too short to sit inside just eating and talking, whilst allowing your body to get out of shape, usually permanently. Be active!

See you at the 4th Annual Pinoy Times BBQ Picnic Fiesta Party thing at Bowness Park!
