SERVUS HERITAGE FESTIVAL

The Servus Heritage Festival is the place to be during the August long-weekend. Nestled in Edmonton’s scenic river valley, bordered by lush ravines and the North Saskatchewan River, the Festival draws visitors from around the Edmonton capital region and across the continent to spend some time sampling the tastes, smells, sights, and sounds of a diverse array of cultures.

Servus Heritage Festival 2012 marks the 37th annual edition of this premier three-day showcase of Canada’s vibrant multicultural heritage. We will feature 63 pavilions representing over eighty-five cultures from all over the world. Sample culinary delicacies, see creative performances, shop for crafts, artwork, and clothing, or chat with people eager to tell you a little about their cultural roots and their present-day communities in Canada.

We are proud to present a celebration of Canada’s renowned multicultural spirit in an atmosphere of tolerance. In spite of events that may be taking place on the international stage, local cultural associations have the foresight to look beyond sometimes centuries-old disagreements, co-exist peacefully for three days in the idyllic setting of Edmonton’s River Valley, and share with visitors, and with each other, those traditions that make their people unique.

The Filipino community in Edmonton began in 1961 when a family of three Filipino immigrants, Drs. Larry and Oliva Gironella, and their first child Nenette came to Edmonton. In the subsequent years, Filipino teachers, nurses, engineers and accountants arrived in Edmonton. The population of the Filipino community in Edmonton continued to increase due to immigration of Filipinos from the Philippines and migration from other Canadian Provinces. Now, after 50 years, there are approximately 65,000 Filipinos living in Alberta..

While the Filipinos became assimilated into the Canadian mosaic community, they continued to preserve their own Filipino culture, heritage, and identity. They also became appreciative and supportive of other ethnic groups in Edmonton. Starting from the early 70’s, some cultural groups have been formed to promote awareness of the Filipino culture. Several Filipino organizations, food stores and restaurants have also been established.

The Filipino community has a very strong ethnic representation particularly in Edmonton. With the continuous support of the Council of Edmonton Filipino Association(CEFA), the umbrella association of several Filipino organizations in Edmonton, the Filipino community has been a participant in the annual Servus Heritage Festival for 36 years now. The Karilagan Dance Society has been the lead group that provides entertainment featuring Filipino folk dance and songs at the Philippine Pavilion. The Filipino community is pleased to show the world the Filipino authentic food, arts & crafts and cultural performances. The Filipino community welcomes everyone to the Philippine Pavilion.
