IT’S PERSONAL

IT’S PERSONAL

Everybody needs a personal trainer!  Business people have business coaches.  Most great leaders and managers have life coaches.  Even our Olympic Athletes have coaches and personal trainers.  Why don’t you?  Personal Training can provide a number of benefits that you can’t get while exercising or working out on your own.  We all need a little help with exercise – whether we’re just starting out or have been training for a long time.  A personal trainer is what you need to take your goals to the next level.  I’ve hired and worked with many personal trainers and nutrition coaches over the years (and I AM a personal trainer), because I see the value and importance of working with these professionals.

Here are some facts from the last Statistics Canada Report on Physical Activity. That shows that 46% of Albertans do NOTHING at all!  70% walk in their leisure time and 46% garden.  WOW – really; since when did agriculture and transportation count as exercise?

Statistics Canada suggests that physical INACTIVITY costs the Canadian economy $5.3 BILLION a year in health costs and lost productivity.  Exercise is hard  – but it’s hardly an excuse.  Personal Training can change the stats and help the Canadian Economy save some money!

Here are a few of the reasons why I like working with a personal trainer:

  1. ACCOUNTABILITY AND MOTIVATION – It’s hard to stick to a consistent exercise program and stay motivated.  Certified personal trainers can provide the structure and accountability to help you and encourage you to live that healthy lifestyle.  Personal Trainers come with built-in motivation – you’re investing time and money; so you’re less likely to skip a standing appointment.
  2. INDIVIDUALIZED – Perosnal Training is awesome if your training for a marathon, a golf tournament, a Spartan Race or bodybuilding/Fitness show.  A Personal Trainer can customize a program specifically for your sporting event.  This is also true if you have any chronic health conditions, or injuries.  A Personal Trainer can and will work with your health care provider to design a safe and efficient program that will take into consideration any exercise limitations to help you reach your health goals.
  3. YOU’RE A BEGINNER AND DON’T KNOW WHERE TO START? – There’s so much to know – key terms, cardio, weight training, flexibility, sets, reps – where do you start; can be overwhelming.  Which weights, free weights, machines, how heavy?  A Personal Trainer can help you maximize your time by designing a customized program that will also keep you safe and injury free.  A Personal Trainer will add structure to your program so you know what days you should be working out, what you should be doing on those days, how much you should be lifting, etc.  You’ll have the confidence and knowledge to keep going!
  4. EDUCATION – The best personal trainers will get you to a stage where you will be able to embrace a healthy lifestyle and start designing your own exercise program.  So, you may only need a few months of personal training.  You will lear so much on how the body works, and how to train in the most effective way to get maximum results.
  5. YOU’RE BORED AND REACHED A PLATEAU – Personal Trainers can add variety to your workouts.  A personal trainer can bring a fresh perspective and new ideas to challenge both your body and mind.  This will definitely help you get out of a rut.  A new workout will help jump start your motivation and keep you focused and on track.
  6. CHALLENGE – A great personal trainer will get you to push past those self-imposed limits, encouraging you to lift heavier, go longer and challenge yourself more than you would on your own.  It’s hard to slack off when you’re working with a trainer – yelling at you to do one more rep!  A Personal Trainer will help you find hidden strengths you never knew you had.
  7. SUPERVISION, SAFETY AND SUPPORT – If you want to make sure you’ve got the proper form, doing the exercises correctly, want to lift heavier and need a spotter, or want to do some partner –type exercises – you need a Personal Trainer.  A Personal Trainer can also give you feedback about your limits and strengths that can help push you and/or slow you down to keep you safe.
  8. RESULTS – Whether you want to gain muscle, lose weight, learn how to eat properly, tone or get a “six-pack” – Personal Training can get you those results!

How do you choose a personal trainer?  You should ask the following questions:

  1. What are your qualifications and certifications?
  2. Do you have liability insurance?
  3. What are your policies and procedures?
  4. Do you have any social proof?  Testimonials?
  5. What’s type of experience do you have?  What is your specialty?

Most importantly you should feel comfortable with your personal trainer.  Feel comfortable with his/her style of communication, training style and what his/her expectations are for you.
