It was 22 years ago when I arrived in Canada and chose Calgary, Alberta to be my home.  Leaving my family and friends behind, it was a new adventure for me to be in a new country without knowing anyone.  That was the time I looked for a Filipino community paper and never found any, [...]

Elder Abuse Movie

HANGGA’T MAY ARAW ANG DAIGDIG

Elder abuse movie by The Golden Generation Seniors Club of Calgary

We received and invitation from Mr. Ben Isidiro, the President of Golden Generation Seniors Club of Calgary about the launching of their movie on Elder Abuse on January 12, 2013.  The launching included the showing of a movie “Hangga’t May Araw ang Daigdig” followed by a question and answer period with a panel of experts on elder abuse. The event was held at the Polish Canadian Cultural Centre and there was an attendance of around 500, consists of young and old Filipino audiences and some Canadians as well.

As we have seen with our common eyes, the movie “Hangga’t…”is a story based on experiences of Filipino seniors in the Filipino Community.  According to Mr. Ben Isidro, the movie was filmed with the purpose of using it as a spring board for discussion by the Filipino Seniors of Calgary. The movie was consists of local talents, mainly members of the GGSC, as actors and production staff. The script was written by Mr. Arnold Molina and directed the filming as well. Mr. Isidro also indicated that he will continue to work with the other Filipino Seniors Association to address this universal problem of elder abuse.

There was a question and answer portion after the movie and the panel of experts from AGEA (Action Group on Elder Abuse), EART (Elder Abuse Response Team) and CCIS (Calgary Catholic Immigration Society).  They believe that the Seniors of Calgary are going to succeed and they will provide assistance within their means to help the Filipino Community. One of  the panel members said that the efforts of associations like theGolden Generations will help in the next 10 ten years that elder abuse will be reported regularly to the authorities.

We look forward to more projects like this to come from our various seniors group or more so ever, that all the seniors group will unite to make up one big produciton for the benefit of every senior no matter what race they may be.  Congratulations once again to Mr. Ben Isidro and his group, GGSC for a job well done!
