It was 22 years ago when I arrived in Canada and chose Calgary, Alberta to be my home.  Leaving my family and friends behind, it was a new adventure for me to be in a new country without knowing anyone.  That was the time I looked for a Filipino community paper and never found any, [...]

CALGARY LIONS HONORS PRIDE IN COMMUNITY

by:  Estrella Tata ‘Tatsky” Gascon-Delos Reyes

The City of Calgary is a vibrant community filled with exemplary volunteers who sets aside their personal interests to serve and help their fellowmen. It is on this note that the Lions Club in Calgary on its 16th year, celebrates outstanding citizens to elevate and honor them so that others may follow.  The global challenges are inevitable.  Thus, it is the vision of many service-oriented community associations to decrease if not to eliminate, such geographical statistics.

I am deeply honored to be invited by the Pangasinan Society of Calgary (PASOC), to attend an awarding ceremony, though not one of its kind, geared to honor several personalities with distinct achievement in the level and field of community service.  And such, is in the persona of its current President Mr. Joven Bautista.

He was nominated by his chapter Calgary Wildrose Lions Club to receive one of these coveted awards.  Jovencio is a community leader who has gone far and wide in his terms of service.  Spearheading fundraisings in and around Calgary, Jovencio does not limit the benefits of these funds in his own people. It does include the people afflicted by poverty & hardships around his circle.

Last year’s awardee was another fellow of Filipino descent, the young and talented, Mr. Winston Gaqui.  Winston was Calgary Wildrose Lions Club’s  pride and honor.

When International distinctions such as this involves our own kind, we step up to join in chorus that we are proud to have the kinds that are well-deserving to be given such honor.

Pinoy Times is always around to capture these moments where our own “kababayan” is brought to a pedestal of success. Just like the Calgary Lions Club, Pinoy Times serve and will continue to serve its readers and supporters to bring them up-to-date with the ones the City look up to with great pride.
