Deputy Premier and Minister of Enterprise and Advanced Education

During my time as a University of Alberta student, I remember how quickly one school year passed and then just how fast another September came. As Minister of Enterprise and Advanced Education, I know the importance of a post-secondary education and how financial options make a world of difference for many students. It’s always a good idea to think about the many student finance options available. Take advantage of this opportunity to reach your academic goals.

If you have been dreaming of switching careers, taking your Bachelor degree to the next level or you simply love to learn, there are numerous resources available from the Government of Alberta to finance your education.

I strongly believe that every learner deserves to have accessible, affordable and relevant educational opportunities. Student Aid Alberta is a valuable resource for individuals who are planning to attend, or are currently attending a post-secondary institution.

Many students use loans to fund their education. You may be eligible for an Alberta student loan if you are a Canadian Citizen, Permanent resident and resident of Alberta, your program and institution is approved, you do not have enough money to cover basic costs and you are enrolled as a full-time or part-time student. There are full-time and part-time loans to choose from.

Other financial assistance can be found in grants (Student Aid Alberta Grants and Canada Student Grants), bursaries (monetary grant based primarily on financial need) and scholarships (monetary award based on academic merit or excellence).

Alberta has one of the most generous scholarship programs in Canada, with 38,000 students sharing in over $71 million this year. Get a financial boost from scholarships and visit www.alis.alberta.ca/scholarships [1] for more information.

Other student aid information found on the Student Aid Alberta website includes a repayment assistance plan, what to do if you need to change your address, applications, forms and a useful PDF Quick Tips guide to help you.

During my university days, there were no iPads or the internet. Today, you can visit studentaid.alberta.ca conveniently on your tablet, cellphone or any computer with an internet connection, to find out more information about student finance options.

Educate yourself about student finance options… September is right around the corner.
