A Prelude to Calgary’s Philippine Independence Month Celebration

by: Tata “Tatsky” Gascon-Delos Reyes

The recently held Gala Night at The Sheraton Cavalier Hotel here in Calgary was a success to many who attended.  Though it is the first time for the Philippine Independence Organizing Committee of Calgary (PIOCC) Officers and members, it definitely will not be the last time.  The support it got from all sectors of the Society proved that good intentions bear positive results.  There are flaws yes. But overall, the Gala De Honor event raised awareness to all Filipinos living in Calgary that there are good hearted citizens who think highly of our Culture and our heritage. Not all commentaries may be good, but it sure will be a learning curve for these men and women of PIOCC to make it better next year.

The Programme flow was very effective in depicting our patriotism and love for our native land. The slides of gallantry by our national heroes, the interpretation of our folk dances by the Kasayahan Foundation and Kalayaan Dance Troupe, and the elegance of the Filipino attires worn by both the men and women at the Gala only shows that Filipinos are capable of demonstrating a united front.

The celebration of Philippine Independence in Calgary had moved up a notch this year.  With the Gala De Honor as the prelude, activities during the month of June includes the June 9th CAFFA Independence celebration at the Eastside City Church, the Philippine Flag-raising ceremony at the Calgary City Hall,  the two-day June 15 and 16 Sulong Kalayaan at the Pacific Mall, and the June 22 Kasayahan Showcase of Filipino talents featuring songs and dances from the Philippines.  Truly a spectacle to watch out for.  Mabuhay ang mga Pilipino.

PIOCC boasts…PAGKAKAISA (Unity): Susi sa tagumpay at pag-asa ng Pamayanang Pilipino (Key to Success and Hope for the Filipino Community)… is great theme for this year.
