Comelec releases final tally of senators

The Commission on Elections (Comelec), sitting as the National Board of Canvassers, has released its final tally of senatorial candidates according to its official canvassing of election results.

In his blog, Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez quoted the NBOC’s resolution as saying that “while there are still remaining uncanvassed votes, the same will no longer affect the ranking of the winning candidates for Senator of the Republic of the Philippines.”

The rankings of the top 12 remain unchanged.

Grace Poe    20,337,327
Loren Legarda    18,661,196
Alan Cayetano    17,580,813
Francis Escudero    17,502,358
Nancy Binay    16,812,148
Edgardo Angara Jr. 16,005,564
Bam Aquino     15,534,465
Aquilino Pimentel III    14,725,114
Antonio Trillantes IV    14,127,722
Cynthia Villar    13,822,854
JV Ejercito    13,684,736
Gregorio Honasan    13,211,424

The top 12 senators were proclaimed by the Comelec barely a week after the elections. Poll chief Sixto Brillantes Jr. said the commission proclaimed the winners based on “projections” than actual votes cast. GMA News

Commentary from ROBERTO UGADDAN:

Last May 13th, 2013 the Philippines had its midterm elections and second automated elections in its history after the 2010 presidential elections. COMELEC commissioner Sixto Brilliantes brushed aside criticisms of the automated system particularly the PCOS machines and the lack of source code review stating that even during the 2010 elections the source code was never reviewed yet people still believed in the credibility of the elections. Philippine style elections is filled with instances of violence against rival politicians vying for power that comes with being elected in office something that we all wish one day will be gone from our country, same goes for vote buying that mostly victimizes the poor people living in slum areas buy selling their votes for food and money while not thinking of the long term effect of their choices on who they will be voting.

The Liberal party was victorious in voting nine of their senatorial candidates in office giving the administration the leverage it needs to pass laws that it deems necessary. Last year they were able to pass the RH bill after fourteen years of debating on the issue and now the 16th congress will be tackling divorce when it resumes in July. We all hope that the electe officials will do their solemn duty to have a government that’s for the people, by the people and of the people and that they didn’t just get into politics to use like a business venture but instead to serve the people and the country with all their mind, heart and soul.
