by CK This morning when I woke up, I noticed that some leaves in our tree in the backyard are starting to turn yellow and I told myself, what an early sign.  For sure we have our nice days numbered as Fall is soon approaching.  I love the color of Fall because it feels so refreshing [...]

“Ghosts (Multo) – True or Not?

Our Mission, God’s Mission: To preach the gospel, to feed the hungry, and to share the love of Christ.”

by Pastor Nilo Briones (B.A.L.M.)

I have been intrigued by this question posed by some people who claim they or their intimates have experienced a gruesome encounter with ghost(s).  Although some experiences may add up to our personal convictions, they cannot validate a standard belief that would function as the truth because there are different stories that seem to contradict the fact that “all truths are parallel.”  But we can trust the Holy Bible that serves as the divine repository of God’s Word and the final court of arbitration in settling important life’s questions, especially concerning our well-being.

Basically, we need to qualify the word “ghosts” by addressing what exactly do we  mean when we speak about it.  If the word refers to “spirit beings”, the answer is an affirmative “yes”.  The Bible is replete with examples of spirit beings, who appeared before men like angels and demons.  Angels are spirit beings who faithfully administers service according to God’s command.  Demons are fallen angels who rebelled against God and whose works are evil, deceptive, and destructive.  On the contrary, if we use the word “ghosts” to refer to “spirits of people who have died”, the answer is emphatically “no” as the Bible negates or denies the idea that the spirits of deceased persons can remain on earth and haunt (takutin) the living.

The only haunting that occurred in the Bible is found in the passage of Mark 5:1-20, wherein a legion of demons ‘possessed’ the man to haunt a graveyard and terrorize people in that area.  The key word here is ‘possessed’ as the main course for a spirit being to connect to the physical world. This is absolutely a contradiction to the practice of those who claim to have psychic powers or business-minded people like the “ghost-hunters” who claim to summon (for a price) the deceased and gain useful information from them.  Such a paranormal activity is becoming rampant in our generation.  But even if ghosts act in seemingly positive ways, it is important to note that the goal of demons is to deceive.  Sadly, people are seeking the truth about the spirit world rather than seek the truth by praying to God.  As the Scripture says, “You will seek Me and find Me if you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13).    Let us then not allow people to be led astray by these lies;  the demons will certainly rejoice when people are deceived and became captives in fear that discredit the existence of our sovereign and powerful LORD.  As Jesus said, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth and the truth will make you free” (John 8:31-32).  Have no fear then, but be strong in your faith in the LORD!
