It was 22 years ago when I arrived in Canada and chose Calgary, Alberta to be my home.  Leaving my family and friends behind, it was a new adventure for me to be in a new country without knowing anyone.  That was the time I looked for a Filipino community paper and never found any, [...]

Association of Batanguenos in Alberta – Edmonton Fund-raising Activities

In behalf of the Filipino people, we would like to thank the international community most especially Canada for their concern and support to our fellowmen affected by the recent super typhoon Haiyan locally named Yolanda.  The strength of this typhoon has never been experienced before with wind and storm surge three and a half times stronger than that of Hurricane Katrina. Aid is already flowing into the devastated region but getting them to those in need is still very challenging.  Some airports are still unusable and many roads are either blocked or washed away cutting off aids to those people in need especially in areas outside of the bigger cities.

Association of Batanguenos in Alberta (ABA) – Edmonton following the initiative shown by the international community and the various Filipino-Canadian groups, started making pledges and donations to the relief efforts right away.  Like many Filipino Associations in Edmonton, ABA have started fundraising activities in line with the dollar-for-dollar matching by the provincial and federal governments to meet the deadline on December 9, 2013.  To date, ABA-Edmonton members have made $1,060.00 online donations to the Red Cross, still have $805.00 cash on-hand and $1,000.00 pledged by members, friends and supporters of the group.  Monetary donations totalled to $2, 865.00 thus far and pledges are still coming in. On top of that, the group decided to celebrate their “Paskuhang Ala-eh” Christmas party slated on December 7, 2013 at St. Charles Parish Hall to be a fund-raising event for the typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda victims in the Philippines.  In an emergency meeting called by ABA President George Aguilar, it was decided that all proceeds from this event will be donated to the relief fund.  Since international organizations are already taking care of the much needed food, water and medicine, the Association of Batanguenos in Alberta – Edmonton also launched “Sabon (soap), Sepilyo (toothbrush) at Tutpeyst (toothpaste)” campaign to help out in our own little way. ABA group is asking for donations of bath soap, toothpaste or toothbrush that you can spare and they will gladly accept and collect them to be sent to Philippines. In order to encourage participation to this campaign, it was tied up to the Paskuhang Ala-eh Christmas party where every donation of soap, toothpaste or toothbrush entitles the donor for a raffle ticket.  All donations will be collected and a raffle draw for all donors will be done during the party.  These are just small things but will help those typhoon victims as they try to rebuild and go on with their lives.  ABA-Edmonton thanks everyone for their support and generosity throughout these years.  Let us all unite to help the Philippines and our fellowmen.
