Albertans honoured for their dedication to community safety

The 2016 Community Justice Awards have been presented to recipients from across Alberta in recognition of their local community safety and crime-prevention work.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the awards event, which was co-hosted with the Medicine Hat Police Service at McDougall Centre in Calgary.

Nominations for the Alberta Community Justice Awards are submitted annually by members of the public. The awards are presented under the categories of leadership, innovation, community mobilization and partnerships and collaboration. The awards event alternates annually between Edmonton and Calgary.

Stand Off
Kainai Peacemaking Program, for combining traditional Kainai teaching with the principles of restorative justice to help community members resolve disputes with the law.

Leadership

Calgary
Aventa Centre of Excellence for Women with Addictions, for providing a holistic and client-centred approach to addictions and trauma recovery.

Community Mobilization

Lethbridge
Lethbridge Police Const. Steven Baker, for helping local businesses reduce theft and work together to prevent crime.

Partnerships and Collaboration

Maskwacis
RCMP Sgt. Gary Maclaren, for his commitment and efforts to improve the community and build a positive relationship between community members and law enforcement.

Tully R. Johnson, for his lifelong commitment to rural crime watch initiatives.
