The University of Alberta will receive $82.8 million from the Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada to improve the quality of facilities and infrastructure for research and innovation.

Ten projects will be funded and the money will help with commercialization of spaces where students turn innovative ideas into reality and breathe life into start-up ventures. While contributing to economic diversification, these projects will also improve the environmental sustainability of post-secondary infrastructure.

“These significant investments help Alberta students put their best foot forward by maximizing the number of new, modernized learning spaces, while also creating much needed jobs to spur economic growth.”

Marlin Schmidt, Minister of Advanced Education

“I want to thank the Government of Alberta for its partnership in the Strategic Investment Fund program. It’s essential that young Albertans have access to world-class education, right here in their home province. SIF funding will help to establish critical infrastructure, enabling Alberta’s best minds to pursue new ideas, tackle global issues, and build a better university and province.”

David Turpin, President, University of Alberta

The funding, which includes $26.5 million from the Government of Alberta, supports capital projects and renewal at the university that will help maintain and improve current campus infrastructure, benefitting students and ensuring the province plays a key role in diversifying our economy and creating a more sustainable future.

Enhancement of the university’s Electrical and Computer Engineering Research Facility will put Alberta at the forefront of research in electrical-power generation and transmission. Renewing labs at Campus Saint-Jean will triple the number of student spaces for increasingly needed bilingual health professionals.

Projects approved for Strategic Investment Funding:

Electrical and Computer Engineering Research Facility enhancement

Chemistry Lab modernization and renewal

Chemical Materials Engineering Building redevelopment

Biological Sciences and Earth and Atmospheric Sciences expansion and enhancement

Innovation and Incubator Space development

Research Network Infrastructure upgrade

Augustana Science Lab renewal

Campus Saint-Jean Lab renewal

Clinical Sciences – Mechanical System renewal

Medical Sciences Building infrastructure upgrade

Under Budget 2016, the Alberta Jobs Plan, the Government of Alberta made a commitment to investing $449 million for post-secondary capital projects and renewal across the province. This investment, combined with the federal government’s Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund, will generate direct economic activity and enhance research and innovative infrastructure for students in Alberta.
