CALGARY COMIC AND ENTERTAINMENT EXPO 2017

by CK
This year’s Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo was indeed a big one.  It as confirmed that there were about 95,000 attendees for the said expo.  As of Sunday afternoon, panels with Cusack, Doctor Who’s Peter Capaldi and Edmonton’s Nathan Fillion, from Firefly and Castle, were popular draws.
I wasn’t able to listen to the panel but I was at the Corral for the interview with Adrian Paul  from Highlanders and with Jeremy Renner of Bourne Legacy and The Avengers.   I would say that Jeremy Renner has a wide range of followers from adults to chilren.  It was a full house when Jeremy Renner was on the hot seat.  It was neat of him to mention how he learned different strokes in places where he had been.  He made mention of learning about the Filipino sticks when they were doing Bourne Legacy in the Philippines.
On the other hand, “(Fillion) did asked the audience how many people were from Edmonton and a lot of people cheered,” Thomas says. “I think we had a lot of Edmontonians coming down, a lot of his hometown folks coming down to see him.”
However, the MVP guest this year may have been Todd McFarlane, the Calgary-born comic-creator and toy entrepreneur who worked on Spider-Man and created Spawn. He was the guest of honour at the opening ceremonies in downtown Calgary on Friday morning, gave away free autographs all weekend and participated in two panels. He even coaxed 94-year-old comic-book icon Stan Lee back to Calgary, even though he had claimed 2016 would be his last year for Canuck conventions.
One guy I talked to was Kirby Murrow who is not only an actor but also a voice over for some of the popular shows like Black Ninja and Michaelangelo of Teenage Mutants Ninja Turtle.  He had a lot of other characters where he was the voice over.
Another cool things they did this year was the Kid’s Zone over by the Agrium building where there’s bouncy houses, face painting and all the other cool games for kids.  There was also the display of Thomas the Train which the young and old  loved to watch.
Work is now underway on expos in Saskatoon, from Sept. 16 and 17, and Edmonton, from Sept. 22 to 24. When does the booking begin for Calgary 2018?
It was denitely a busy place for the BMO Center that weekend of April 26-29 2017.  From variety of vendors, exhibitors, you really need the entire weekend to go and see them all.
We are looking forward to another bigger Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo in  2018.
Congratulations to the organizers and all the supporters of this wonderful expo that give us fun times in our lives.
