It’s been 23 years since I’ve moved to Canada from the Philippines.  I remember that the first thing I looked for was a Filipino community paper so I can read some news about the community being new in Calgary.  I never found any Filipino community paper back in 1996. From them on I told myself that [...]

When Life Blows Hard, Be Anchored!

By Pastor Nilo Briones

“Life is unfair!,” exclaimed a friend as he narrated his ordeal after being diagnosed with cancer and treated with a regimen of chemotherapy, eventually losing his job. He used to be a good provider to a closely-knit family. The same strong emotional remark was hopelessly uttered by a young career woman who is living with an irresponsible partner. Another cry poured out from someone who was betrayed by her close family members. Indeed, everyone has his own share of story in life with its sentiments.

Folks, no matter what you’re going through, life is still beautiful. “Cast your burden on the LORD, and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved” (Psalm 55:22). His shoulders are way stronger than yours as you remain steadfast in Him. There are some biblical characters who went through the same unwholesome experience and, true enough to His promise of abiding presence, God carried them through as a loving and caring Father. One classic example was a righteous man named Job who, being tried, lost all of his livelihood, children, and was afflicted with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head. But the LORD not only sustained him, but everything was restored to his life in double portion. Therefore, whether you’re in good times or bad, just hang in there, keep holding on to your faith, and keep believing in the LORD. He is still in sovereign control and, with His infinite wisdom, He has the best interest for us. Life may be labelled ‘unfair’, but God is fair!

Sometimes trials are masqueraded as blessings in disguise waiting to be revealed at the right appointed time, if we only have to be patient and wait on the LORD. He has His own way of directing the affairs of the righteous who fear and revere Him. Trials prove the authenticity of our faith in Him, whether it is genuine or not. Trials are for the righteous and not for the unrighteous. Trials have beginnings and endings. And as the LORD sustains you, the end will always be a proven faith as you get closer to Him, and a stronger character and relationship that honours Him.

Having said all, in times of adversity, take this nugget of wisdom…be anchored to His Word, for “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’” (Matthew 4:4). When a storm lambasts your life, hold on tightly to God’s unfailing word for the righteous — “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5).
