The year just flew by, it ’s barely 45 days and we’re into 2019.  It is amazing that with the change of season, that’s how fast we can feel that the year is almost over.  We started getting snow here and there and yet we’re still in the fall season. Mid-October to early November was a [...]

His hand is bigger than mine!

By Pastor Nilo A. Briones, BALM

Have you ever heard the witty story that reads, “A young boy went to the local store with his mother. The shop owner, a kindly man, passed him a large jar of suckers and invited him to help himself to a handful. Uncharacteristically, the boy held back. So the shop owner pulled out a handful for him. When outside, the boy’s mother asked why he had suddenly been so shy and wouldn’t take a handful of suckers when offered. The boy replied, “Because his hand is much bigger than mine (author unknown)!”

In a seemingly paradox of life, the foretold story is true when we give what we cannot lose and receive much in reward.  This is biblically spoken by the Jesus Christ when He said, “Whatever you do to the least of my brothers or sisters, you do it  to me” (Matthew 25:40). When a crisis strikes and such situation enables a person to help someone in dire need, being kind and gracious is better off than holding back.  While the world basically promotes self-preservation and self-indulgence, giving is still much lauded in spiritual sense.  Sometimes it is typically thought that when we give, we lose something.  But in the eyes of the Lord, we have earned a meritorious reward that only Him can abundantly give in return.  This is the true essence of prosperity – being blessed according to what pleases Him!  We may consider our giving small, but when we share it with spirit of joy it becomes a sweet-smelling aroma to Him whose “hand is bigger than ours and is never too short to bless.”

Moreover, giving may not only be in material things, but could be graciously done by the quality time we intentionally share for our families.  While we are driven to meet our pressing economic need, we have to reconsider the wisdom that we need to ‘work in order to live and not live in order to work.’  As we give our time to listen to our children, we get to know them better.  Kind and appreciative words reinforce strength in binding love for everyone in the family, as they lighten the load of each day, especially to working parents.  A gentle tap on the shoulder with a warm smile or embrace is what a couple should share at the end of a busy day.  Moreover, giving a hand of forgiveness speaks volumes when needed the most.  Sometimes it is easier said than done, but when we share love manifested in action and not just words, we are blessed by God.

Furthermore, each day is a gift from our Creator, who has lavished us with a precious life that we need to be grateful of.  As we open our hearts and share what we have to those in need, we honor His name.  Indeed, returns come in different forms when we bear one’s another burden.  At the right appointed time, sometimes when we least expect it, life becomes a blast of surprise, so let’s give and be blessed!
