What Does Love Look Like

By Consuelo (Chit) E. Munar

“What does love look like? It has the hands to help others. It has the feet to hasten to the poor and needy. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has the ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of men. That is what love looks like.” – St. Augustine

Annually, Valentine’s Day is celebrated worldwide. It’s recognized as a significant cultural, religious and commercial celebration of romance and romantic love. Most commonly, love refers to a feeling of strong attraction and emotional attachment. We as individuals, exist on the material, emotional and spiritual essence of love.

Love begets love. Having a relationship is about loving and being loved, feeling preciously and deeply connected to another human being, having a place for your heart to come home to. We fall in love easily and falling in love feels wonderful. As both emotional and spiritual beings, these aspects, side by side move generally in the same direction toward more and more love. Between couples, it’s the essence of keeping each other’s good at all times. In Corinthians 12.31, love is explicitly defined as being patient and kind. “Love is not envious, boastful, arrogant or rude. It is not irritable or resentful, does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth.”

More than words of love, the acts of caring, comfort and love are forms of emotional graciousness. Offering to help someone, whether our loved one, a family member, a friend, a neighbor, or a stranger, we enter the realm of love’s genuine meaning. To enact the full magnitude of our lovingness, we must develop our capacity to love and be loved to its utmost. For in the end, nothing we do or say in this lifetime matter as much as the way we have loved one another.

We will never run out of things that have to be handled in this life. Not all of these things will give joy. Most of the time we think of what love can do for us that the notion of love as service is almost inconceivable to us. We’re not sure how to serve or what our true service might be. The truth is we are all already serving in one form or another. As a parent, you’re serving your children. If you’ve cared for an invalid neighbor or an aging parent, you have also served in love. If you have given a homeless person a dollar, saved a stranger from drowning, given up your seat on the bus/CTrain, then you too have served in love. These are the seedlings of service.

Service in love is temporarily setting aside your own needs, wants and priorities and allowing the needs of another human being to become so radiant, that for a moment, your own are dissolved. This gracious moment is love, and the more we live in the practice of service, the more we create this love. For when we serve one another,we also serve the great cause of LOVE.
