Reflections

by Juana Freedom

2020 is almost over and even if a lot of people think that it was a wasted year, I think that it was more of realization. Rich or poor, when a pandemic like Covid19 hits the entire universe everyone becomes equal. No one has a special pass to be spared from the virus. We all need to comply with what we need to do to make sure we don’t get contaminated by the virus. We are all waiting for the day to come that this virus goes away and that everybody the the vaccine that will prevent us from getting this virus.

But in the meantime, despite of everything that’s happening, Christmas is just around the corner. Some of us lost our loved ones not because of Covid but maybe due to other illnesses and it will be very difficult that they are no longer with us for the holidays. On the other hand, I just think that those who won’t be with us for the holidays have accomplished their missions in life and are now enjoying the fruit of their labor in the house of the Lord. I’m pretty sure they have their own Christmas celebration in heaven. Unfortunately, our Christmas will be much different from them as we have to observe social distancing, no big Christmas parties/get together, we have to wear our face masks at all times and in some places they even have to wear face shields.

But what is the real essence of Christmas this year? It’s the birthday of our baby Jesus, that’s the simplest way we explain it to children. Another way for children to get excited and look forward to Christmas is when we tell them that Santa Claus will be dropping off their gifts thru the chimney on the eve of Christmas day. I remember dressing up on Christmas day and after church my father will take me to my godfathers and godmothers to get my Christmas presents. I cannot deny the fact that as a child I always look forward to Christmas day year after year.

But for us adults, what is the true essence of Christmas? With this pandemic that kept us in a bubble for 2020, it came to my realization that when worst comes to worst everyone is faced with the same scenario, there is no rich or poor and everyone becomes equal. Because whatever material things you have in life won’t be able to save you from the virus. I believe that in this situation that we’re facing right now that Christmas is in the air, Kindness and Forgiveness are very important to each and every one of us. When we treat others with kindness we make the other person feel worthy of their existence. Even if they are having a bad they you can make a difference when you treat them with kindness. As the saying goes, it is better to give than to receive. Another important aspect in life that we have to practice especially that after Christmas comes New Year is Forgiveness. We do not forgive for the benefit of those who have wronged us but for our own benefit. We have to make peace with ourselves and the only way to do that is to forgive those who have wronged us. We do not have to interact with them again since forgiving doesn’t mean that you will trust that person again. As they say, live and let live.

In closing, I wish and pray that everyone will have a safe and healthy Christmas and that 2021 may be filled with happiness and success and a Covid19 free year!
