Folks, how do you see life? Well, a common yet bold and prominent quotation says that, “Life is a daring adventure or nothing at all,” which deserves consideration especially if it comes from someone who was blind and deaf — the famous Helen Keller. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, she went on to become a world-famous speaker and a prolific writer. In fact, she is remembered as an advocate for people with disabilties.
There’s a biblical story, well-loved by young and old, that bears a resembling message as written in Matthew 14:25-29, which says, “Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, ‘It is a ghost!’ And they cried out for fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.’ And Peter answered Him and said, ‘Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.’ So He said, ‘Come.’ And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.”
There are lessons here worth pondering about life. One, whenever we face crisis of any kind, let’s always remember the ‘immediate’ comforting words of Jesus saying, “Do not be afraid.” Though, at times, He allows strong wind to strike the boat of life, let’s remember that God (being sovereign) is under control for even the forces of nature are at His command. Another striking lesson spells that, instead of being troubled, a time of crisis can be perceived as an opportunity to bring out the best in us. We can experience the Lord’s power as we exercise the gift of faith that He has bestowed upon those who believe in His Name. Life is indeed a thrilling adventure, a walking on water that’s exciting as we take a daring leap into the seemingly impossible for with God all things are possible. While the other disciples are filled with fear inside the boat being stricken by the stormy wind, the brassy Peter dared a miraculous walk on the water towards the Lord. What about you – are you content just being in the boat or do you dare to walk on water to live a brief yet meaningful life that gives honor and praise to God?
