Events to No End……..

psychedelic-connie2Calgary is indeed  a  very multi-cultural city and the just concluded GLOBALFEST proved this once again with the participation of different nations all over the globe.  PINOY TIMES was one of the community partners of GLOBALFEST and it was such an honor to hear them acknowledging us every night before the fireworks competition.  This only proves that the Filipinos are indeed a big part of the City of Calgary.  We would like to acknowledged the hardwork of Cherry Tumolva who was responsible for the Filipino Cultural Pavilion for the 2009 Globalfest.  It was thru her efforts that we were able to showcase the true spirit of the Filipinos during the festivities.  There was also the KAMAYAN Filipino Food Kiosk which was made possible thru the efforts of a group of friends mostly from Airdrie.  Some of there were our advertisers from before and up to the present, there was NRG Fitness by Jay Raymundo, Mortgage Intelligence by Rodel Jimenez and Simply Belle by Belle Jimenez to name a few.  They showcase some of the Filipino favorites such as the Longanisa, Lumpiang Shanghai, Barbeque pork/beef and for dessert the most popular Halo-Halo and the never dying TURON (banana springroll) with ice cream.  Indeed it was a very successful event that everyone enjoyed with all the variety of choices available to the attendees.  The fireworks competition was totally a blast, with all the different techniques and the music, everyone was amazed with all the  wonderful works of each competing nations.  Yes, indeed, we will be looking forward to next year’s GLOBALFEST and PINOY TIMES will be there again over and over to witness such festivity.

It just doesn’t end there,  we also just concluded the recently well attended

WOLRDSKILLS 2009 COMPETITION.  The delegates from all over the world showed their skills in each different fields.  From the opening ceremony to the closing ceremony, PINOY TIMES was there to witness this  event.  The Philippines was represented by a flag bearer and a scout during the opening ceremony.  One of my photographers was lucky to get a shot of the parade of nations during the opening ceremonies.

Now that Fall is almost around the corner, we should try to enjoy to the fullest the warm days that we still have for the next week or two.  We can enjoy a bit of driving around out of the city limits to the nearby CROSSIRON MILLS just by Balzac where you will find numerous outlet stores that you will not find in the city.  Or if you are more of an outdoor person, just go for a drive out to the Kananaskis, Banff , Lake Louise or even Jasper and enjoy the beautiful sceneries.  You might notice that there might be a slight change in the colors of the leaves as you drive out in the country.  Yes, Fall is just around the corner.

My husband and I were out of town on one weekend to attend the 50th wedding anniversary of my sister-in-law from Lac La Biche.  When I booked  our stay at the Ramada Hotel in Lac La Biche I recognized right away the voice on the other line to be that of a Filipino.  I was not wrong, yes, she is a Filipino.  We stayed at the new Ramada Hotel and was happy to see Filipinos working in the said hotel.  There were about 6 of them who just arrived a week ago to work for the said hotel.  My in-laws indicated that there must be around 100 Filipinos now in Lac La Biche and most of them work in the other hotels and restaurants around town.  I gave the housekeepers and receptionist of the Ramada  copies of PINOY TIMES so they can get to know what’s going on not just in Calgary but also around Alberta and also from back home.  They were indeed happy to see a Filipino as a guest at the Ramada that weekend.

As I was busy putting the September issue of our publication, I got an invitation from a group of contract workers for their go-away party.  These guys were the last batch of workers to come from Manila last year to work here in Calgary.  They were a batch of good workers, very knowledgeable in their field and Filipinos are known for their patience and determination. But because of the recession that hit the North American industries, there was about 22 workers from this group who were laid off from their jobs.  It was very sad to learn about this incident and some of these guys have volunteered their time helping with the delivery of the papers when I needed help.  It was a sad day for them but I always tell people that “when one door closes, another one opens,” and “if it is not meant to be, it is not meant to be.”  But that does not mean that it is the end of the world.  Patience is a virtue and determination is another one.  Put these two together and you will eventually be rewarded in the end for your hardwork.  As the saying goes “there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.”  So do not lose hope and no matter what your belief is, do not lose that faith and trust to the one above us.  Another quote that I love and I will always believe in no matter how young or old I am is -  “ A WINNER NEVER QUITS AND A QUITTER NEVER WINS.”  So would rather be a quitter than a winner or a winner rather than a quitter?”  The answer is for you to decide.  But for me, I’d rather be a winner than a quitter.

Thanks to all the PINOY TIMES readers, please continue your enjoyment of reading every issue and to all the advertisers, thanks for all your support.
