Bong Revilla urged to be Gibo’s VP

ABS-CBN News

MANILA -  Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla’s party mates in the Lakas-Kampi-CMD are urging him to accept an offer to be the running mate of standard-bearer Defense Secretary Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro in the May 2010 polls.

Speaking at the Balitaan sa Rembrandt forum on Friday, Lakas-Kampi-CMD deputy secretary-general Ray Roquero said that “since the name of Sen. Bong Revilla was floated a week ago, there’s now growing support for a Gibo-Bong tandem.”

For instance, he said the president of the League of Provinces of the Philippines Gov. Loreto Ocampos of Misamis Occidental believes Revilla would be a good running mate since he has been governor of Cavite.

“I think malakas ang dating ngayon ni Bong Revilla, at habang papalapit tayo sa national convention, baka magkaroon pa siya ng maraming suporta, and we hope he will heed the call of our colleagues in the party for him to accept itong offer,” Roquero added.

Revilla himself earlier confirmed on-going talks between his and Teodoro’s camp for a possible tandem, even though he had already decided to run for reelection in deference to his father’s wishes.

Roquero said Revilla’s supporters cited the support that he ostensibly could get from three provinces: Cavite, where Revilla served as governor; Rizal, where the governor, Junjun Ynares, is his brother-in-law; and, Nueva Ecija, which is his father’s home province.

Add to that, Roquero said, the fact that basketball icon and former Senator Robert Jaworski is also an in-law.

“So we have three or big vote-rich provinces that will be backing up Bong Revilla,” Roquero said. “Nandiyan din yung mass appeal of the [basketball] legend Sonny Jaworski na isa rin sa mga in-laws ni Bong Revilla, so malaking support ang makukuha niya.”

The Lakas-Kampi-CMD will hold its national convention on November 19, the eve of the first day of the filing of certificates of candidacy, principally to affirm the earlier selection of Teodoro as standard-bearer.

While it is likely that the vice presidential bet would be proclaimed too, Roquero said the convention would essentially be a Teodoro show.

“We want this thing to be Gibo only … we have to admit humahabol kami sa ratings, and we want this event to be a launching pad sa kanya to catch up sa ibang candidates,” Roquero said.

Loren, Bong, or Edu

Meanwhile, Teodoro admitted his party Lakas-Kampi-CMD is currently negotiating with several individuals to be his running mate in the 2010 elections.

When asked if Senators Loren Legarda, Bong Revilla, and actor-TV host Edu Manzano are among the personalities, he said they are all viable options and choices.

In the end though, Teodoro said that he will have the last say on who his running mate will be.

The announcement, he said, will be made several days after he leaves office in 10 days.

As if on the campaign trail already, Teodoro on Friday attended four consecutive meetings with community leaders, from youth leaders of Zamboanga who paid a courtesy call at the Department of National Defense, to a Philippine Board member convention in Tagaytay City.

But the biggest boost he got was the endorsement of the Unang Sigaw party, a local party led by Gov. Oyie Umali of Nueva Ecija.

The Unang Sigaw party is affiliated with the adminisitration Lakas-Kampi-CMD. During the Unang Sigaw party launch, it introduced its candidates in the 4 districts and 27 municipalities of the province. It also endorsed the candidacy of Teodoro. — with a report from Jay Ruiz, ABS-CBN News
