Speak the language of love…

By Pastor Nilo @ Jesus Word of Life International Fellowship

What’s the word of life this month, folks?  Well, it’s all about how we use our tongue, being a small part of our body yet it possesses the power to build up or wreck down our souls.  I was recently talking to a contract worker who seems to be making good as a caregiver here in Calgary.  She, however, claims that she’s shy and sometimes would grapple with a nostalgic thought in the past justifying that her introvert personality may be a trickle effect of the conservative upbringing of her grandparent (or “lola”) who would suppress her to talk when there are elderly people or to reason out in explanation when she was being disciplined as a child. On one side of the coin, she’s grateful to her lola, but the other side unknowingly develops an unhealthy intimidation or fear to speak up in public even when the inside of her has much to say.  This is in contrast to a famous slogan of the Kabataang Baranggay (a Filipino youth organization in the early ‘80s) which says, “Makialam!”, meaning be concerned by admonishing the young people to be involved and to speak up for the common good of the country.  While conventional truth tells us when to talk and what to talk, it certainly is wisdom not to keep quiet when a situation calls for it, especially in this full of zip generation.

On a spiritual perspective, the Bible says that, “We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check.  With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be” (James 3:2,9-10).  Here, our brother James is exhorting us to be extra careful in using our tongue.   As Christians, we should speak the language of God’s love – words that encourage and not discourage people especially when hope is pale and dim, kind words that compliment or appreciate and not hurting, words that thank and praise God for being good and merciful to us no matter what circumstance we are into, words that guides, comforts and strengthen the weak and feeble, words that inspire speaking the truth in love, and words that only mean that you truly care!

Finally, someday we will take account of whatever we have spoken while we live on this side of eternity as Jesus says, “But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned” (Matthew 12:36-37).

Jesus Word of Life International Fellowship is congregating at the North East Bible Church at #175 Whitefield Drive NE, Calgary (just a 100-meter walk from Whitehorn C-train station).  Every Saturday, our Bible studies is at 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. (children/youth/adult) and worship services at 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. followed by food fellowship.  If you need to be ministered in prayer, please don’t hesitate to call Pastor Nilo at (403) 973-0623 or e-mail at [email protected]. “God’s mission, our mission: to preach the gospel, feed the hungry and share the love of Christ.”
