It was 22 years ago when I arrived in Canada and chose Calgary, Alberta to be my home.  Leaving my family and friends behind, it was a new adventure for me to be in a new country without knowing anyone.  That was the time I looked for a Filipino community paper and never found any, [...]

Views and Opinions

By Roberto Ugaddan

Recently, I have seen on TV (thru my TFC box) the interview of Marilyn Aguilar Pollard about her son, Jason.  It hurts for a mother to go thru such pain when your son is in the midst of this situation.  And we saw on national TV how much she loved and cared for her son from the day he was born up to now.  A mother’s love for her child will always prevail no matter what.  And we don’t just see it from Marilyn’s situation but from other ordinary people around us.  A mother’s love is incomparable to the other kinds of love that we witness day in and day out.  If you remember LA PIETA by Michelangelo,  where the Virgin Mary is holding the body of her son, Jesus, on her lap after his crucifixion on the cross, it is no different from a mother who will always be there for her child.  Based on WIKIPEDIA,  one of  LA PIETA’S  interpretation from a viewer is actually looking at an image of Mary holding the baby Jesus. Mary’s youthful appearance and apparently serene facial expression, coupled with the position of the arms could suggest that she is seeing her child, while the viewer is seeing an image of the future. Finally, one modern interpretation suggests that the smaller size of Christ helps to illustrate his feebleness while in his state of death; no longer living, he now appears small in his mother’s arms.  So we can therefore say that a mother’s love can be considered the greatest love of all because no matter how much pain you’ve caused your mother like in Marilyn’s case, she will still be there to show everyone that there is no better person in this world than her son.  And no matter how much people will condemn her son, she will always be by her side, a loving and caring mother till the end of time.

Since it’s February and one of most important days of this month is the 14th which is Valentine’s Day, let’s us not forget the love that couples have for one another.  You can be married or unmarried couple who would profess your love for one another every day of your lives.  I am very much delighted to see couples who are celebrating their 1st, 5th, 10th, 15th, 25th, 50th wedding anniversaries.  It’s so amazing how they have spent their lives together and that  their love for one another brought them together for years and years.  But is it only love?  Or their marriage was built with understanding, caring, faithfulness and loyalty to one another.  Love is the main foundation of their union and the rest are icing on the cake.  I remember when I go to weddings, the wedding vow, “TILL DEATH DO US PART”.  There is one event in my life as a child that I will never forget about this wedding vow and that was when my Lola sa tuhod  was hospitalized for almost 1 month and the day she passed away was the actual day of my Lolo’s death anniversary.  I considered my Lola and Lolo’s love for one another an everlasting love.  How often do we hear about this?  I’m sure not too often.  So for all those married/unmarried couples who have gone thru the test of times, may you have more blissful years ahead.

Growing up as a teenager, I’ve gone thru what you call PUPPY LOVE, you know younger people still go thru this kind of love.  It  is almost like an infatuation or comparable to having a dream person in your life. You also have what we call LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT, well sometimes this is most difficult one to conquer.  How can you fall in love at first sight?  I guess some people do and some can attest to this that the first time they saw each other, there’s the spark they felt right thru.  I know some couples who got married and are still together because of their love at first sight.  Funny but true, love is a very magical feeling.  And how about PLATONIC LOVE?  I heard of a story of a couple who got married in their 60’s because during their early teen years they became sweethearts, then all of a sudden they drifted apart for some reasons and after so many years, got acquainted  when both their loved ones passed away and because love is still in the air, they decided to get married.  Isn’t love an endless feeling?  I guess this is what we can call ENDLESS LOVE.

So for all of you out there, let us fill our life with love for all the people around us and HAPPY VALENTINES’ DAY!
