Edmonton… In conjunction with Fraud Prevention Month, the Alberta government reminds consumers to learn more about their rights when shopping online.
“Internet shopping is different than shopping at a store or market. It is a borderless and global marketplace,” said Service Alberta Minister Heather Klimchuk. “A few minutes researching consumer rights and seller obligations will ease your online shopping experience and help safeguard your personal information.”
Alberta’s Internet Sales Contract Regulation requires businesses that sell products or services on the Internet to provide consumers with a copy of the contract within 15 days. Contracts must include a description of the goods or services, an itemized price list, the delivery date and the company’s cancellation, return, exchange and refund policies, if any.
To protect themselves, consumers should:
Safeguard personal information. Be careful what you share – the more information others have about you, the greater the security risk;
Use caution when giving out credit card information online. Ensure the site is secure by looking for a website address starting with https:// or a lock icon on your browser;
Keep a record of documents and e-mail messages about the goods or services purchased for future reference.
Consumers can also cancel the contract and reverse the charges in some circumstances when they make an online purchase using a credit card.
Consumers with concerns or complaints about an order they placed can contact Service Alberta at 1-877-427-4088 (toll free in Alberta). Additional information can be found on the Internet Shopping Tipsheet at www.servicealberta.gov.ab.ca/1020.cfm
