2010 WINTER OLYMPICS - what did we learn from this competition in different categories with many different countries? I guess from my own perspective, I can say that with our TEAM CANADA, unity prevailed even if some athletes came from the East and some came from the West. It is still CANADA that they are representing and they are there for the same goal, to get the GOLD. Based on statistics, it is only now that the host country got the most number of gold medals (Canada has 14 gold medals). There is so much stories to be told and very unforgettable ones as well. One that really touched my heart is the figure skater, Joannie Rochette, she got the Bronze medal. It was with deep sorrow that her mother passed away due to cardiac arrest as soon as she got to Vancouver. For Joannie, to have performed in the honor of her mother, we salute you. You are a very brave woman, who was sent out to fight your battle and kept your head up high up to the very bit. Her victory will live on thru the years of her life and the entire Canadian history. As what was said by the commentator during her performance, it’s not about the medal anymore, but it’s all for her mother.
I had a blast with our Men’s curling team headed by Kevin Martin. What a very strategic game to play, it’s just like playing chess on ice. Kevin’s team proved that with proper coordination and strategy, you can win them all. Not to mention that Cheryl Bernard who headed the women’s curling fall short for the Gold, but even if they got Silver, it is still gold of us. And the teamwork that our Men’s and Women’s Hockey Team proved that Canada is a Hockey country. It was a very tight game both for the Men’s and Women’s team but they teamwork and fighting spirit brought us the Gold.
So what do we really get from 2010 Winter Olympics as Filipino-Calgarians? UNITY…….even if we come from different regions from the Philippines, we are all FILIPINOS. Even if we belong to different ethnic organizations here in Calgary, we are all FILIPINOS. Whether we came here as immigrants, contract workers, live-in caregivers, we are all FILIPNOS. No matter how long you have lived here in Calgary, be it 50 years, 40, 30, 20, 5, 3 years or just 6 months, we are all FILIPINOS. This is all I can say, do not be a stranger to your fellow FILIPINOS, be a friend not an enemy. For making friends than enemies will take you a long way.
