A hero lies within you!

by Pastor Nilo Briones of “Jesus Word of Life International Ministries”

“Life is short, but it’s always long enough to become a hero,” says Pastor Ed Lapiz who was my mentor when I met him in Saudi Arabia during his early ministerial days in the Middle East.  And I believe it’s a noble thing to become great so long as, in everything you do in life, it brings honor to God thus fulfilling His wondrous design in your life.  All praise and glory belongs to the Lord alone in whatever we do and aspire of.

I remember David who fought Goliath (with a towering  9-foot tall stature) at a difficult time when ancient Israel was at war with the Philistine.  He triumphed over Goliath by not being gigantic as his enemy but by just being himself, a young shepherd.  He challenged the giant with his full-of-faith words saying, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel’s army, whom you have defied” (for 40 days!).  Equipped not with any armor or battle gear, David had only his slingshot and 5 smooth stones – that’s how big his faith in the Lord whom he trusts.  And, lo and behold, wonder of all wonders, he killed Goliath in just one slingshot of stone.  This is one fulfillment of the word of truth, “Not by might nor by power but by my Spirit, says the Lord Almighty.  And David became a hero, great in the eyes of Israel because he was committed for a great cause.  His success was measured with a significant cause – that is to free his people and to give glory to God who was continuously challenged by the uncircumcised giant.

What about you – what’s your vision or goal in life? What are you committed into?  A man may be busy chasing the wind of personal ambition in life, be heralded with human praise on whatever he worked at sacrificially, and be chronicled in the Guinness book of records, but if it is done without a significant cause that would give praise to God – it’s all vanity.  Anything done without eternal value is worth nothing!

Moreover, David was anointed by God to do the monumental task of saving Israel from being enslaved by the unbelieving Philistines.  Take notice that David was not a warrior but a shepherd.  However, he used his past experience as he subdued with his bare hands the wild animals (lion and bear) that attacked his sheep.  He has seen how the mighty hand of God was with him.  Folks, you too can be used by God through your past experience and natural ability which are God-given and ordained.

Furthermore, another spiritual lesson to learn in this wonderful biblical story is on David looking at Goliath as a mere mortal man trying to fight the awesome, powerful God.  What are your Goliaths?  It maybe  a huge financial burden, an emotional or relationship conflict that’s so unbearable, or a physical ailment that stresses you down and exhausts your hope – remember, look at them with the spiritual eyes of faith.  There is no problem greater than our God.  You only have to trust in Him as you cast your cares and worries to the Lord in prayer.  Every day is a blessed opportunity of victory if we are on the side of God, for the battle is the Lord’s as David confidently trusted in Him.  You, too, can become great if you do good deeds in godly righteous ways.  Anything done for God’s glory will always produce the fruit of success in His most holy Name!

Cheer up then, arise and let your light shine for a hero lies within you!
