Dear readers, The summer is going fast as everyone is having fun especially that we just wrapped up the festivities of the 10 days Calgary Stampede. The weather cooperated in a way where it showered during the parade but it all went well. I’m sure that the organizers of Calgary Stampede were all happy with an [...]

After Mary Kate Aquino’s successful singing concert stint last May 8, the young lass sure has the potential to reach her dream for stardom in the world of music. I had the chance to meet her in person and our tête-à-tête was one of the best I have done in my 2 years as contributing writer for this paper. I look at her as if she is not 11 years old. Prim, serious, and the eagerness to answer with grace – the questions that would be thrown at her. Very enthusiastic I should say.
Mary Kate’s interest in singing started at a very young age of 3. She looked at her big sister with awe as the latter performs a make-believe radio announcer act in one of their play times. In her fragile age, she began to explore the world of music. Humming to the tunes and later on crafted memorizing lines of songs, Mary Kate developed her skills into something big. Her parents saw the potential and encouraged her to dwell on the spirit and gave her all the support and love in the world for her endeavor to one day be a star. And surely the star slowly shone as years went by for her.
She was a common sight in her school participating in the many talent shows, and other extra-curricular activities that would enhance her personality. She enrolled in the John Robert Powers School for acting, modeling, and singing. She was in the church choir even though she was the smallest and youngest member. She nailed everyone in their seats while she performs. She joins beauty pageants, singing contests, front act shows, cultural performances, and whatever is out there to develop her talent.
She remembered her performance at a local fiesta in Pangasinan where her parents are from. The stint was something truly memorable for her. She heard the ear breaking clapping of hands around her. Wow! The people loved it. She truly can perform and make this a career – she thought. But amidst of this all, she values her education too. That is why even though singing is on her plate, she knows how to set aside this time to focus on school first.
Singing is not only a passion for this child. Singing is something she wants to be a professional of someday. An Entertainer with grace & style. And as I look at her eyes, a serious entertainer is out in the making for sure. She said she must have inherited this from her Grandma Juanita (her mom’s mother). She was a great singer in her days. Maybe someday, when she gets to go home to the Philippines again, she will try out for another audition with the big networks back home. ABS-CBN, GMA, & TV 5…watch out!
Mary Kate would like to thank her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Mar Aquino and of course her other producers Mr. & Mrs. Reth Barnachea for believing in her. The May 8th Concert is only the beginning of the many more she looks forward to. The Filipino community of Calgary is proud to have produced a local talent that would someday bring us honor and glory. Kudos to you Mary Kate. Congratulations once again!
