October 18th marked a big day for all Canadians when they decided who will be the next Mayor of Calgary. And the people have spoken and everyone seems very happy with the new Mayor-elect Naheed Nenshi. I believed that with his campaign strategy which is more of social networking on Facebook and Twitter, he was able to reach out to the people with his vision and mission if ever he gets elected as the new Mayor. Now that he has been sworn in and has started his big task in the City Hall, everyone will be waiting if his vision and mission will be put into reality. I strongly believe that with the new elected members of the City Council together with Mayor Nenshi, nothing is impossible. So congratulations to all who made it in this year’s election and we all hope that Calgary will even be a better place to live for all of us.
The recent Halloween trick or treat brought joy to kids for all the goodies that they got. Every year, it has always been fun for the kids to wear their Halloween costumes. Back home it’s more of the traditional visit to the tomb of our departed beloved by having a candlelight vigil and bringing flowers. This celebration of All Soul’s day bring families closer as they pay respect to their departed ones. Every time I go back to visit Manila, I never fail to visit my dad’s tomb at the Manila Memorial Park. I cannot be there exactly on November 1st but paying a visit to his grave will always be a part of my itinerary when I go back home. For us Filipinos we will always remember and give respect to our departed loved ones who have been a part of lives.
One day when I was driving home from work, I had to make a quick stop at one of my friend’s office. On the way out where I parked, I have to put my signal light and make sure that the other oncoming cars would notice and give way to me as I make my way to merge and get into his lane. Putting your signal light is a road courtesy and people should at least acknowledge that you are not just cutting in front of them. Unfortunately, the guy probably was in a rush and never let me into his lane, but I guess, he’s driving a luxury car and I’m not and so I did not have the right to just merge into his lane. This is kind of rude not letting the person who was courteous enough to put the signal light on to let him know that “Can I get thru, please?” I just want our readers to observe road courtesy and following traffic regulations at all times anywhere and anytime of the day.
I came across an article about the RH Bill (Reproductive Health Bill) which is a part of my headline news on page 9, I think at this point there should be a separation of church and state when it comes to this matter. Growing up, I realized that the Catholic church played an important role in our life. The Church has strongly opposed the bill and has drawn the ire of non-Catholics and Catholics alike who support the bill, and they invoke the principle of separation of church and state to stop the church. Born Catholic, one thing for sure that I will never be in favour is abortion. As a Catholic, I have opposed abortion because I believe that an unborn child should never be punished just because one is not ready to have a child. Getting married at an early age, and being a mother at the age of 19, I have made all the sacrifices that I can in order to raise my child. So for women who has unwanted pregnancy, I hope that you will consider your pregnancy as a blessing and not a burden (this is just my own humble opinion). I believe that a child is a gift of life; you will be the guiding light to this child and with your guidance as a mother/parent, everything will be possible.
“Fr. Joaquin Bernas, S.J, one of the drafters of the Philippine Constitution and a prominent lawyer and writer, explained that the concept of separation of church and state is directed towards the state, rather than the church, as it is a political concept. It does not prevent the church, parents, supervisors, teachers and other moral educators from expressing their views and educating their wards on the morality of their personal and social actions.” (source: WIKIPEDIA)
