Calgary Mayor’s Office announces new team

OFFICE OF THE MAYOR OF CALGARY

For immediate release

December 7, 2010

All staff selected for the Office of the Mayor

Mayor Naheed Nenshi is pleased to announce that a full team is now in place at the Office of the Mayor. The team includes:

Chima Nkemdirim – Chief of Staff

Daorcey Le Bray – Communications Advisor

Monique Nesset – Administrative Liaison

Joshua White – Policy Analyst

Scott Deederly – Policy Analyst

Franca Gualtieri – Office Manager

Nancy Close – Community Relations Coordinator

“I’m very excited to be working with this team of talented professionals,” said Nenshi. “This is already a cohesive group that is both responsive and supportive—a team that is committed to making Calgary an even greater city. In particular, I wish to thank Lori Stewart for her excellent support during our transition period since the election.”

BACKGROUND

The following individuals are included in the staff of the Office of the Mayor.

Chima Nkemdirim joins as Chief of Staff after 13 years practicing securities law as a partner at Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP.  Outside of the office, he had served as the President of Sage Theatre Society for over six years and is currently the Chair of the Calgary Foundation’s Culture and Heritage Advisory Committee.  Chima holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Calgary and a law degree from the University of Ottawa.

Daorcey Le Bray joins as Communications Advisor from career in the private sector as a communication consultant—most recently at NATIONAL Public Relations. His previous clients were from a variety of industries including oil and gas, non-profit, consumer electronics, financial services, legal, and pharmaceutical. Daorcey holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications Studies from the University of Calgary.

Monique Nesset will continue on as the Administrative Liaison for the Office of the Mayor. She has worked for the City for nearly 10 years within Customer Service & Communications and Information Technology on corporate-wide initiatives. Her experience includes working in federal, provincial and municipal governments with an education that includes a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and a Graphic Arts diploma. Her strategic focus for our office will be to manage special projects and continually improve on customer service for the citizens of Calgary.

Joshua White comes to the Office of the Mayor as a Policy Analyst with a professional background in urban planning and public policy. Prior his current role, he worked at Toronto urban design and planning firm Urban Strategies. Josh holds a Master’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the School of Policy Studies at Queen’s University. He is a passionate Calgarian who is focused on sustainable urban development, community revitalization, and improving transportation.

Scott Deederly is also a Policy Analyst in the Office of the Mayor. He joins the team after serving as Constituent Assistant to Red Deer Member of Parliament Earl Dreeshen and previous Red Deer MP Bob Mills.  Scott is a graduate of the University of Alberta with a double Major in History and Political Science and a Certificate in Global Governance.  Experienced in running a legislative office, information research and serving constituents Scott is a past associate member of the Association of Independent Information Professionals.

Franca Gualtieri brings over 10 years of administration experience to her role as Office Manager. Prior to joining the Office of the Mayor, she held an administration and advising position at Mount Royal University in the Bissett School of Business for 10 years.  Franca’s official training is in Event Management which let her hone her organization and communication skills.  She comes to the Mayor’s Office after serving as Executive Assistant for the Vice President of Alberta South for BMO Bank of Montreal.

Nancy Close played a significant role as volunteer coordinator in the Nenshi mayoral campaign and is joining the Office of the Mayor as Community Relations Coordinator. As an elected Trustee with the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) for eight years, Nancy served as Chair of the CBE Policy Committee and a Director on the Alberta School Boards Association.  She was also involved in restructuring the governance structures of the CBE—a project recognized by the Conference Board of Canada/Spencer Stuart Awards in Governance in 2007. She has continued her commitment to public education by serving on the Board of Governors of Education Matters, Calgary’s public education trust.
