Overseas Filipinos and groups were cited as recipients of the 2010 Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas at Malacanang Palace.
President Benigno S. Aquino III honored the awardees composed of seven Filipino organizations, one foreign group, three foreigners and 13 Filipinos from the United States, Hong Kong, South Korea, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Australia, Germany and Canada.
The Commission on Filipinos Overseas, the Awards Secretariat for this year, received 110 nominations from 23 countries.
The nominees underwent screening of three different committees with representatives from government agencies, media, academe, religious and business sectors.
The President presented the Lingkod sa Kapwa Pilipino Award to Teresita R. Alarcon from the United States of America; Ruth C. Martinez of Australia; North Central Virginia Association of Philippine Physicians (NCVAPP) from the United States of America; Philippine American Association of Connecticut (PAAC) of the United States of America; and the Philippine German Community Oberberg e.V. from Germany.
The Kaanib ng Bayan Awardees are Caritas Lebanon Migrants Center (CLMC) in Lebanon; Phoebe Lam Bik Che of Hong Kong; Sunny Lam Kai Chor of Hong Kong; and Simha Salpeter of Israel.
The Banaag Award were presented to Dr. Emely D. Abagat of South Korea; Computer Society of Filipinos International (COMSOFIL) of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; Congress of Visayan Organizations (COVO) of the United States of America; Federation of Filipino Communities in Israel (FFCI) in Israel; George G. Gange of the United States of America; Marilyn R. Kasimieh of the United Arab Emirates; Kinding Sindaw of the United States of America; Sr. Lucia C. Olalia of South Korea; and Evangeline V. Ybo of Jordan.
The Pamana ng Pilipino Award was presented to Lilac L. Caña of Canada; Angelito D. David of the United States of America; Fred S. De Asis of the United States of America; Bernard Randy G. Gener of the United States of America; Lilibeth E. Navarro of the United States of America; and Rafe Totengco of the United States of America.
The Awards is a biennial awards system which was institutionalized through Executive Order 498 signed by former President Corazon C. Aquino in 1991.
The Awards recognizes the achievements and significant contributions of Filipino individuals and organizations overseas to communities here and abroad. It is also a part of the activities in celebration of the Month of Overseas Filipinos and International Migrants Day this December.
From 2003 to 2008, there were 314 individuals and organizations from 42 countries and territories who/that were conferred the award.
