Motorists to be refunded for Speed-on-Green tickets

Edmonton… Alberta Justice will quash all convictions for Speed-on-Green tickets issued in Edmonton from November 2009 up to and including January 14 due to concerns about the reliability of the intersection safety cameras. Motorists who received a Speed-on-Green ticket during this time frame and subsequently paid the fine will be refunded.

“This is the right action to take,” says Alison Redford, Minister of Justice and Attorney General. “Our first concern is the fair administration of justice, and we cannot proceed with legal action when there is doubt about the accuracy of the city’s Speed-on-Green ticket technology.”

This move follows the City of Edmonton and Edmonton Police Service’s announcement on January 14 that it is cancelling the distribution of Speed on Green tickets until further notice. In addition, the Crown is withdrawing all Speed-on-Green tickets issued in Edmonton presently before the courts.

Approximately 102,700 tickets were paid between the period of November 2009 and January 20, 2011. Alberta Justice is working with the City of Edmonton to establish a process and timeline for the refund.
