CALGARY- The centenary celebrations started last February for Chinatown 100, the Year of the Tiger, have now come to an end as the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre prepares a weekend carnival to welcome the “Year of the Rabbit” in the coming weeks. The City of Calgary is pleased to have partnered with over 115 community partners to host celebrations of this significant milestone of our community, Chinatown 100. The Year of the Tiger offered over 60 events and programs enjoyed by more than 100,000 Calgarians. Calgarians took advantage of these opportunities to learn more about the vibrant Chinese culture existing in our community, the history of Calgary’s Chinatown and the significant contributions to our city by the Calgary Chinese community throughout the past 100 years. “I am delighted with the overwhelming success of the year-long Chinatown Centenary Celebrations,” said Druh Farrell, Ward 7 alderman and Co-Chair of the Chinatown Centenary Celebration Advisory Committee. “I am especially impressed with the level of participation by 115 community and government organizations, who worked together to reach over 100,000 Calgarians. Congratulations!” On Friday, Jan. 21, nine Chinatown Centenary Community Champions were honoured by Mayor Nenshi and Ald. Farrell with a “white hat” (for their leadership and special contributions to the development of Calgary’s Chinatown and the success of the Chinatown Centenary Celebrations. The Champions were:
“The centenary celebrations have been a success of community and government partnership, as demonstrated by the contributions made by the valuable community partners and the high number of citizen participation at celebration events, “said Jason Luan, The City of Calgary Community Lead for the Chinatown Centenary Celebrations. “This centenary has built cultural understanding and created lasting legacies that will contribute to Calgary being an inclusive and vibrant community.” For more information about Chinatown 100, please visit calgary.ca/chinatown100.
