Bill 1 to help chart new course for Alberta-Asia relations
Edmonton… Alberta will focus new energy and expertise on the growing economies of Asia with a provincial council of trade and business experts. Through Bill 1, the Asia Advisory Council Act, the government will establish the council, which will help inform and advise on strategic priorities and how to best tap into the tremendous opportunities available throughout the region.

“The global recession caused us to pause and reflect on how important it is for Alberta to diversify our markets and become less dependent on one trading partner,” said Premier Ed Stelmach. “This council will bring new ideas and help shape a 21st century vision of Alberta-Asia relations.”

The Minister of International and Intergovernmental Relations will oversee and select council members who will represent a cross-section of organizations and interests, including business, cultural and academic communities.

The council will make recommendations on how to increase export development and investment attraction opportunities, increase tourism and air service linkages with Asia. The council will be required to submit an annual report to the Minister.

“Asia is not a new frontier for us, but we must do more to expand this dynamic relationship,” said Iris Evans, Minister of International and Intergovernmental Relations. “I’m looking for people with the experience and the insight to help chart a new course for Alberta-Asia relations.”

The Asia region includes key markets such as China, Japan, Korea and India, and, when combined, is Alberta’s second largest export market worth over $6.9 billion of Alberta’s $69 billion in exports in 2009. Asia is also becoming a leading source of foreign direct investment in Alberta.

Council members will not receive remuneration for their time but will have incidental expenses covered. If the Asia Advisory Council Act is passed, the council will operate until December 31, 2014 and could be extended if required.
