Federation of Canadian Municipalities names Calgary as its 2011 Green Champion

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) has awarded The City of Calgary with the 2011 Green Champion Award for its impressive track record on sustainability demonstrating commitment, leadership and innovation across municipal departments. Mayor Naheed Nenshi accepted the award on Sunday, June 5, 2011 at the FCM Annual General Meeting on behalf of The City. The FCM Green Champion Awards recognize municipal governments and individuals for best practices among Canadian communities.

“Calgary has been recognized as a Green Champion for its long-term commitment to sustainability and environmental protection,” said FCM’s newly elected president and councillor for the City of Kitchener, Ontario. “By focusing on community engagement, real environmental impacts and systems thinking, it has succeeded in moving several innovative sustainable development plans and projects from idea to reality”.

Calgary was chosen because of its record of commitment to environmental issues. The City has won numerous previous international, national and regional awards celebrating its environmental stewardship efforts. Calgary has achieved nine of the ten milestones in the Partners for Climate Protection Program and received five FCM Sustainable Community Awards including two in 2011.

The first award was for Plan It Calgary, the three year process of developing a long term vision and plan for integrated land use planning. The second award was for the renovation of the Calgary Public Building, updating the building to achieve a 46% reduction in operating costs and a 54% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

The winners of the 2011 Sustainable Community Awards served as the pool from which a panel of judges chose Calgary as the Green Champion.

“It is very gratifying to be chosen as a model for sustainability,” said Mayor Nenshi. “As a community and as a municipal government, Calgary is taking action to ensure its future generations have the same quality of life and environment as we enjoy today.”

Mayor Nenshi will present the award to Calgary at the June 13 meeting of Council, 9:30 a.m. in the Council Chamber.
