Alberta indeed is a province of great fun and enjoyment. Lots to see and do in this wonderful province in the west. Having based in Calgary for over 15 years, there’s indeed lots more to see as years passes by. On July 1st, my family and I drove to Lake Minnewanka just an 1 1/2 drive out of Calgary. I remember when my kids arrived in Calgary in 1997, this was the first trip we did in the fall. My kids were so excited to see this beautiful lake that they asked me if they can go for a swim. I told them it’s cold but that did not stop them. Indeed they took a swim in the beautiful lake, but not for long because it’s really cold unlike the tropical waters back home in the Philippines. And after 13 years, my kids and I went back to Lake Minnewanka and this time they did not ask that question of “can we go for a swim?” instead they bought themselves tickets for the 1 hour boat tour around the lake. I took a walk while they were on the boat tours and saw a lot of people along the picnic ground; it was indeed a beautiful day to enjoy the sunshine. An added bonus that day was the free entrance to the park because it was Canada day.

Coming from the Philippines, I would say that majority of Filipinos here in Alberta are Catholics. Back home we always observe our HOLY WEEK based on our calendar. In the Philippines we can observe the tradition with the Way of the Cross and witnessing Passion plays. But here in Alberta, during the month of July, we can witness a true Passion Play in the Badlands of Drumheller. I was a there a few years back and I cannot believe the presentation that they have for this one of a kind reenactment of the Passion play. The 3 hours play will run from July 15 to July 24 with some evening and afternoon performances. It will bring you back to the dramatic portrayal of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in an acoustically superb natural bowl amphitheatre will make you feel like you are actually there. If you have not seen this play, I would recommend that you go and watch it.

The past month there’s has been a lot of community engagements as it was the celebration of our Philippine Independence Day. We managed to take part in the Knights of Columbus, Zambales, VISMNSA and Kasayahan celebrations and you can read the articles and looks at pictures on our succeeding pages. Please let us know ahead of time if you would like PINOY TIMES to do some coverage of your associations events for free in the future. We would also like to congratulate MS. RIZZA SANTOS for winning the title MS. WORLD CANADA 2011. Indeed Ms. Santos is another icon in the Filipino community of Alberta having captured one of the most prestigious titles in the pageantry world.

Now for the most treasured event in my 15 years here in Calgary, the ROYAL TOUR, was indeed a big success and will always be in the hearts and minds of ALBERTANS. From the little town of Slave Lake, the Royal couple, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Will and Kate, has shown an excellent picture of humility having visited the damaged caused by the fire in Slave Lake. People from all walks of life were there to have a glimpse of the Royal couple from the BMO Stampede reception to the Calgary Stampede Parade and up to the time they left for LA. It will always be a part of Canada’s history that indeed the 9 day ROYAL TOUR was a success and ALBERTA was part of that success.

So off now to the true spirit of ALBERTA, Calgary Stampede here we come! Mabuhay tayong mga PINOY!
