A CONCERT IN REVIEW by Tata “Tatsky” Gascon-Delos Reyes

The concert held in Calgary featuring Jed Madela, a local Philippine artist whose voice captured the audience and judges of the 2005 World Championship of the Performing Arts (WCOPA), was clearly an astounding success once again. A comeback performance from his 2010 Calgary visit, Jed Madela captivated the Calgarians with his powerful voice.  I am not a believer myself because I missed the 2010 show. But when I heard him sing and perform, I was even screaming the fanatic “I Love You Jed!” chant at the back with the rest of the volunteers and staff of Umac Image International who brought this wonderful talent in Calgary.

In my research, Jed made waves after single-handedly winning all the major industry and category awards at the 2005 WCOPA, where he was the best performer amongst 3,000 contestants from 52 countries and took home the coveted Grand Prize.

The performance was held at Century Casino as where most concerts are being held these days. People came in clusters and at 7:00 PM sharp, Mr. Reth Barnachea a.k.a. Juan Manila of Pinoy Radyo 94.7 FM started the ball rolling. The local talents were all awesome! From the dance moves to the amateur singers, Calgary’s prides are one day going to get their places in the entertainment industry. There simply is no doubt the first 45 minutes of the hour was the start of a phenomenal show that will come after.

Jed’s introduction number received a resounding applause from his audience.  I know that somehow, I will not be able to contain the excitement that was starting to crawl all over me.  I can also feel the same vibrations looming from my seatmates. The theatrical numbers most especially his rendition from the famous play “Jesus Christ Superstar”, was definitely comparable to that Operatic Tenor Mr. Luciano Pavarotti. Although not very many seem to appreciate the theatrical side of Jed’s program it did not take a lot of effort to convince these sea of heads that they are being mesmerized with Jed’s non-stop performance.  His voice can see saw between the highs and lows of musical tones and the smoothness is still imminent.

The more than 3 hours of time well spent, of a Sunday breakaway, and most of all a finish off the weekend and begin a new work week for everybody, was in short great and stupendous in all angles.  I hail this one-man show a success and I raise my hands in congratulatory gesture to Umac Image International’s Larry Baguisa for bringing a great artist of his generation in Calgary.  To all the producers who worked with Umac, our salute to all of you.  Pinoy Times will always take pride in being yoru media sponsor at all times. Congratulations!
