Pinoy Movie In Review

Pinoy Movie In Review thumbnail

by  Tata “Tatsky” Gascon-Delos Reyes

“THE MISTRESS”

Starring:  by John Lloyd Cruz & Bea Alonzo

I have never watched a Filipino movie at the Sunridge Spectrum where the entire theatre was jam-packed and full house. In the last 2 years since Filipino movies started to be shown in Calgary at a frequency pace of one in every 2 to 3 or sometimes up to 4 months, I have never witnessed a movie night filled with moviegoers such as the one I went to last Tuesday, October 2.  The day, being the once-a-week discounted movie night (Filipinos love bargains), was also a night where the slow cold winds started to arrive in Calgary.  Uh uh!! the breeze of wintery-like wind that spelled clearly, Fall has touched down, and winter is soon to arrive, never stopped the movie lovers and goers to watch this latest offering by Star Cinema.  The title alone in itself is very inviting and a lot of thoughts crawled up in many. What was this movie all about?

The movie to me is that typical torn-between-two–lovers genre of romantic dramas.  This one though is a fight between father and son of a woman that captured their heart.  Mellow dramatic and sometimes funny, the movie’s subject may have tickled many men and women whose situation depicts of same nature. Especially in a far country like Canada where foreign workers were welcomed in the last 4 years, quite a few of this matter surfaced. I’m no judgmental about it, it is not my beef, but, the movie itself is not as exciting and as eye-catching as it’s title depicted.

Although, I can honestly give my own two thumbs up for the performance of the new generation artists in the personas of John Lloyd and Bea.  They have matured in the last number of years.  They have come out of their shells and truly had a developed sense of acting compared to their “ teen bop bop” tele serye days.

Same credits are thrown to the acting skills of veteran actors Ronaldo Valdez and Hilda Koronel (now based in the US) who apparently went home to the Philippines to shoot this film.  The most credit I would give is to the dedication of Anita Linda.  A veteran and multi-awarded supporting actress in her days, now probably in her 70’s, but still loves to act and show her unstoppable talent.

Nonetheless, the film was a blockbuster again because of the nature of its title. The story may be a little far fetched from reality.  But minding that it does happen and there may be Saris and Erics everywhere whose love is tested by fate.
