It was 22 years ago when I arrived in Canada and chose Calgary, Alberta to be my home.  Leaving my family and friends behind, it was a new adventure for me to be in a new country without knowing anyone.  That was the time I looked for a Filipino community paper and never found any, [...]

Countdown to Christmas

By: Glynn Galla

Ber months; falling leaves; cold weather are few to mention this time of the year. Most of us took this as a sign that the big celebration is yet to come, the Christmas season. As we all know we Filipinos started our Christmas fever as soon as September kicks in. Christmas songs are one of the things that really excite us as we wait for the great holiday of the year.

Most of our unforgettable childhood memories are from Christmas Season. We were brought by our parents that Christmas is the time we will enjoy the most. Lots of gifts, foods and many others that make us excited and when we hear the word Christmas, before we knew it we just simply smile.

People are slowly decorating their houses, putting up the Christmas tree and starting to make their wish lists.  As you go to the mall you can’t help it but notice the displays and new set up for the upcoming occasion. Months before the Christmas there lots of gimmicks those establishments are doing. They have sale or discount promos incorporate to the holidays. Like in the Philippines, many of our kababayans have their own way of interpreting the Christmas. In the northern part of the archipelago they started making the world famous Christmas lantern, they are known for their bright blinking lights and colorful designs.  Making Christmas trees made out of fine materials, Christmas décor, are few they also make as the demand rise when the Christmas is getting nearer.

As it slowly going to the happiest month, we also look forward that we wanted to spend with our love ones. Especially us that are not in the Philippines really look forward to spend Christmas time in the Philippines. Even early as the first quarter of the year Filipinos working abroad check flights going back to the Philippines, because they really want to experience our own Christmas like no other.

Gifts and Presents are also the things that we can’t deny that somehow are expecting. It might be clothes, shoes, watches or anything that one we know, or our love one is giving it to us, but instead don’t wait that someone will give you, rather give something heartily.

Even though we are celebrating Christmas every year there’s always something in it that we always look forward to. Like in the Christian dogma, we are also preparing to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. We try to cleanse ourselves spiritually. It’s a start of giving ourselves a chance to good things, sharing the blessings that we received for the whole year, patching up with old friends, reconciling with our enemies; forgiving people who sinned against us are some practices that many of us observed.

Count to Christmas is truly exciting, lots of things that we can do at this time of the year. As the TV or radio doing the countdown that Christmas is just around the corner, certainly it is. We must forget the true meaning of the Christmas. It’s the love, let’s always remembers the spirit of giving and sharing, not just great clothes nice foods that you have but also the virtue of being kind to others.

Don’t even wait for the countdown, if you can start now, do it. After all, for me Christmas day is every day.
