It was 22 years ago when I arrived in Canada and chose Calgary, Alberta to be my home. Leaving my family and friends behind, it was a new adventure for me to be in a new country without knowing anyone. That was the time I looked for a Filipino community paper and never found any, [...]

November 25,2012 6:00 pm was just like every typical cold winter night in Calgary. But strangely, it was exceptionally hot at the Century Casino ballroom as two of the Philippines most entertaining and popular show groups performed lived in front of a warm receptive Calgary crowd . The bold and daring Kamikazee band back to back with the sensual Mocha girls thrilled the crowd for all three hours of music and exhilarating fun. Kamikazee, the punk, pop, rock group kept the crowd on their feet with their OPM hits Ambisyoso, Halik, Martyr Nyebera, Doo Bi Doo, Ordertaker, Huling Sayaw and Tsinelas. Jay Contreras, the group’s flamboyant lead vocalist, who popularized the band’s maiden hit song “Narda”, delighted the crowd with his antics and non-stop energy all through-out the performance. At one point of the show even climbing and singing atop the huge sound speakers, doing a headstand, wacky gyrating moves and tore down his shirt showing off his multi- tattooed body. Mocha Girls on the other hand was equally entertaining and successful in making their audience imagination run wild by playing and engaging the crowd with their adult –themed performance. Considered as the hottest sing and dance group in the Philippines today, this all female group composed of Mocha Uson, Mae dela Cerna (formerly of Eat Bulaga (EB) Babes), France Fainsan, Yumi Ociman and Chloe Recto performed in their skimpy sexy outfits belting out some of their signature hits. The crowd went wild when all five ladies invited men of their choice from the audience to join them on stage, have them sit on a chair and handcuffed them while singing and dancing to the tune of “2 become 1” by the Spice Girls and the rest is too hot to print. The local group’s version of the very popular Korean hit song “Oppa Gangnam Style” literally brought the house down. It was truly a night of one of a kind entertainment that made Filipinos here in Calgary feel closer to their homeland. Kudos rightfully belongs to Ms. Lottie Brar of MC ltd. and Ms. Emma Bohol of Forex Alberta for continuously bringing in homegrown acts and talent and producing quality shows for the viewing pleasure of Filipino residents of Calgary.
