Studded with District 37-O Dignitaries, government officials from the Alberta Government including MLA Wayne Cao, with representatives from the Philippine Consulate, Vancouver, Hon. Consul General of Southern Alberta, Ferdie Aguirre, and community leaders, the celebration was complete. Highlight of the night’s event was the turn-over ceremony of the outgoing president, Francisco “Pepe” Siapno and incoming president Glenn Garalde.
The farewell speech of both emphasized the continuity of grants to the following recipients: eyeglasses recycling, STAR ambulance, dog guides, diabetes prevention, brown bagging, Mustard Seed, Interfaith Food Bank, shoe box, Diamond Seniors, Caring Hands of Jesus with the youth funds allocations such as LEO Leadership Training, Waterton Leadership Training and to consider new Leo projects such as Youth Exchange.
The incoming year has projected new endeavors such as the School Backpack for indigent Philippine schoolchildren and the post secondary scholarship grant.
Active participation in the Alzheimer’s Walk, Mother’s Day Walk, Christmas Light Installation, Charter Nights of other clubs, District, Multi-District conventions, officer’s training to name a few that went through the years.
The outgoing president presented his token of appreciation to all members whose contribution to the club made his term successful and effective. Worthy of president’s awards in his terms were: Marivic Heraldo, Flordeliz and Angelito Viray, Evelyn Cruz Porter and Cecile Larouche. Likewise, Francisco “Pepe” Siapno received the “Most Outstanding Lions of the Year” award with his wife Lydia, the outgoing secretary whereas “Lions of the Year” recipients were Al and Elena Mapanao, the outgoing and the incoming vice president. “Rookie of the Year” were Fe Wallace and Michael Juarez, the 2nd vice president for this Lionistic Year 2013-2014.
For outstanding voluntary services, major awards were given to the following: Francisco “Pepe” Siapno, Elvie Valeroso, Raquel Garalde “ Brian Stevenson Fellow” whereas Perla Umbalin and Rose Dapat were “Dog Guides” recipients. “CNIB/Jack and Denise Isaman” plaque was given to Erlinda Alberto, “Lions Eye Bank” awardee was Al Mapanao, “Dr. Jack Dobush Fellowships” were Lydia Siapno and Belen Rebalbos and “Lionel Bird Award/Lions Youth Exchange” awardees were Teresita Picardo and Juanita Vispo.
“Melvin Jones Fellowship”, which is the highest award from Lions Club international were given to Elvie Valeroso, Glen Garalde and Teodora Nagera.
District Governor Bruce Bishop, Zone Chair Richard Tumanon were given the plaques of recognition for their support to the club. Further, PDG John & Eileen Watson, PDG Roger and Rose Geonzon PDG Gordon Prusky were given plaques of appreciation for their unselfish advice to make the club stronger in all forms.
Cayene Garalde, the incoming president of Calgary Wildrose Leo Club, daughter of Glenn and Raquel Garalde and Winston Gaqui, prospective Lions and grandson of Pepe and Lydia Siapno ran the even with excellence as masters of ceremonies for the night.
