First of all, I would like to take this opportunity for the 5 years that PINOY TIMES has been supported by its’ advertisers and readers in the Filipino community throughout the province of Alberta. As publisher, it was not an easy task to a one woman show to do everything for this community paper to grow. I would like to thank all of our volunteers who have been giving their time and effort to send in their monthly contribution to our paper. I believe the volunteerism is defined as the policy or practice of volunteering one’s time or talents for charitable, educational, or other worthwhile activities, especially in one’s community is one way of discovering a person’s hidden talent and expertise in his unknown field. PINOY TIMES is an open door to whoever wants to explore their writing skills. People come and go and whatever they want to pursue in the life is very much understandable. As of this issue, ESTRELLA DELOS REYES is no longer in anyway affiliated with PINOY TIMES and PINOYLIVING TODAY. We wish you luck in all your future endeavors whatever it may be.

We would also like to express my sincere thanks to Mayor Naheed Nenshi who did everything in his power to be there for his constituents during the time of calamity, the unforgettable flooding that happened on June 21st when downtown Calgary totally shut down everything. With Mayor Nenshi’s dedication to his city, he was there 24/7 attending to the situation. He missed his naps and at times has sleepless nights just to keep up with all the people affected by the flooding. Now I can say that Calgary is the #1 place to live in Canada as we have witnessed the support from different sectors in this time of calamity. Same goes to the Premier of Alberta, Alison Redford, who right away monitored all the different towns out of Calgary with the flooding. The provincial government’s effort to help out the victims of the flooding giving out the pre-loaded debit cards, $ 1250.00 of adults and $ 500.00 for children up to age 18 is a very big help for the victims to start up with their daily living. It is very unbelievable but true that such flooding hit several towns of Southern Alberta and the city of Calgary.

And because of the flooding in the city, the annual picnic of PINOY TIMES has been cancelled. The money we paid for the rent of shelter 1 will be donated to the Alberta Red Cross for the typhoon relief fund together with whatever will be collected from our readers, family and friends. I would also like to give credit to our newly appointed Honorary Consul Aguirre for leading a team of volunteers FIL-CAN TASK FORCE OF ALBERTA, who willingly donated their time and effort to delivered relief goods donated by the private sector. More stories on our succeeding pages on this relief work.

Please do not forget to spend time in the outdoors this summer. Enjoy the company of your family and friends with all the different outdoor activities. Get lots of Vitamin D and make sure you drink lots of water to avoid getting dehydrated during our hot summer days.

Again, thank you for all the advertisers who are always there to support our publication and to the readers who continuously pick up our monthly issues and read our stories. Just a few things to watch for – OUTSTANDING PINOY SEARCH 2013 is now open; PAROL MAKING CONTEST in NOVEMBER and a Valentine show in 2014 – all brought to you by PINOY TIMES.

Until next issue, MABUHAY ANG PINOY TIMES!
